If he didn’t have the extension, people degrade his value for potentially being able to bolt after a year (even tho he would have immediately got an extension for whichever team traded for him). In the situation that played out, people complained about Dame being too overpaid and old… end result is the same regardless of what people are complaining about.

I don't think that's true. Look at what the Spurs got for Kawhi from the Raptors knowing he will leave after the season to play in Los Angeles. If anything, Riley might get Dame for much less if Lillard didn't sign that extension as he have a player option after this season. No teams will give up the farm for 1-year rental of Dame. The end result will be much different than what we have now because of this Lillard contract extension and look how the GB thrash the Blazers FO because they give this contract to Lillard.
