Thoughts on Hassan Whiteside as Sixers backup 5

Seems like he might be a decent fit with the vet minimum. I do believe the Sixers have more than enough space if Harden's contract terms as reported are accurate.

He was fine but inconsistent as a backup for us. Probably about the same caliber as most minimum guys. He's big, and slow, and isn't always aware...but he is also reasonably athletic for his size which makes him a valuable defender despite his weaknesses. Just don't expect him to give you starting caliber minutes.

Sixers have cycled through a lot of these guys recently. JaVale McGee, Dwight Howard, Andre Drummond, and DeAndre Jordan. Guys from a previously huge contract that are past their prime but effective in limited minutes (aside from DeAndre who is not longer effective)

Thybulle, De’Anthony Melton and Whiteside off the bench?
With also Danuel House and Paul Reed.

Maxey|Melton
Harden|Thybulle
Tobias|Danuel House
Tucker|Reed
Embiid|Whiteside

Rather see BBALL or Reed gobble up those minutes... Trouble is Doc is, well, he has trouble with progressive thinking.

I just don't see enought minutes from Reed and Bassey so they need something cheap as a regular season minutes eater.

How's his D compard to Drummond which is very poor.

Sixers signing another former Twitter foe of Embiid's?

Seems like they are going to roll with what they have at center. Paul Reed was pretty solid in the playoffs, particularly given the circumstance. Bassey has some potential as a shot blocking rim runner. And Tucker is an option if they want to go small and spread the floor.

They've also got 16 on the roster at the moment, so I'd think they'd have to like anyone they brought in on a minimum quite a bit.

Doc doesn't really trust the young guys though. Both Reed and Bassey need more regular season minutes IMO.
Enbiid needs serious load managment so he can make it through the playoffs.

Aren't BBALL and Reed the same guy?

Yes, sure he meant Bassey and BBall Paul (Reed).

Even more of a reason for Morey not to sign someone. To force Doc's hand early.

I'm OK either way, but I wouldn't mind bolstering the backup 5.

They really missed Drum's impact off the bench once he was traded to the Nets. Embiid had an ex-all star level backup to allow him to play 30 mins or less a game without much loss on the board. Literally perfect for a star who can't stay off the injury list.

How bad was he? Doesn’t Joel play most of the game?

Surprised he's still in the league.

He was a -22 in 17 minutes in games 2 vs the heat. He was a -9 in game 3 in 13 mnutes. Doc didn't play him after that.

I'd expect him to be not as good as Durmmond, but still way better then Jordan - who should have been out of the league for a couple years. Even with the limited late-season buyout options as C replacements Philly really should have done better (or less of a certain disaster).

Joel's backup is arguably the most important backup in the nba. being able to keep joel at 31-33 minutes max and letting him take games off without feeling the temptation to play him big minutes makes a big deal. He also cant play over 40 minutes in the playoffs and his teams have gotten blown out at historic levels when hes not in games. Whiteside might be a good choice since he can start games and not have them alter their playstyle too heavily.
