Finishing Top 5 in Any Award (MVP, DPOY, Ect.) Voting Should Be an Accolade

Post#1 » by KidPistol » Mon Aug 15, 2022 8:56 pm

I’ll keep it simple;

I understand many people despise participation trophy culture but I feel like adding this as an accolade will put it in perspective for future NBA fans looking to learn about the greatness of players today.

For example:

If Embiid never wins an MVP, at least the future generation woul know that he’s a 2x MVP runner up. I see this as no different than a Grammy nomination or Oscar nomination.

In fact if this was in place, LeBron James would be looked at in a much better light as he’d be number in history in regards to individual accolades.
The scariest question in NBA history.

"Can Stephen Curry get better?"

I personally think that stuff matters and consider them to be accolades. If demar kept up his early szn pace and was fifth in mvp or something, i would definitely consider that as a career accomplishment, and I image he and his peers would as well. I agree with you, they should kinda do it like an award show imo where they have the nominees talk about each of their seasons and count down from the 5th to the winner.

Who cares about runner up or anything less than that?

You finished 4th in MVP voting WOOOO let’s throw a party. It just waters down the awards.

I’m sure someone has developed a greatness metric that takes all that into account anyways

I feel like someone like Karl Malone would get more respect if this was taken into account.

Don't we have all-nba teams, and all-nba defense teams to award players who were not the best but among the best. MVP and DPOY are not the only awards.

But why should he get more respect?

I have absolutely no evidence to back this up but my guess is that fans overwhelmingly don’t care. If someone wants to come up with their own measure that takes this stuff into account that’s fine but the NBA should not be watering down these awards.

Like another poster said we already have 3 different all NBA teams and a bunch of other awards. Adding more doesn’t make anything better

The last thing Karl Malone needs is more respect.

I've always looked at MVP Award Share as well as # of awards. But I'm also a guy who thinks it is silly when fans act like making the finals and losing is no different than only winning 30 gamesa.

This is basically what MVP Award shares try to capture. They also try to capture really dominant MVP awards vs. close ones.

Embiid was on the all nba 2nd each year he was an MVP runner up.

Marc Gasol was on the all defensive 2nd team the year he won DPOY.

There isn’t any consistency.

Patrick Ewing finished 4th in MVP voting in 1995 but didn’t make an all-NBA team because David Robinson, Shaq, and Hakeem made the teams.

Artis Gilmore never made an all-NBA team but finished top 10 in NBA MVP voting twice.

I feel like people should look at MVP voting when evaluating someone’s career. If you only look at all-NBA teams then guys like Ewing and Gilmore get overlooked.

I still think it’s silly that an All-NBA team can have 2 point guards, 2 shooting guards, 2 small forward, or 2 power forwards but only one center, but that’s another discussion.

So you want to say that Embiid was voted as 2nd best center for all-nba 2nd team, when in fact he was 2nd best center. Was good, was awarded, what is wrong with that.

Why stop at top 5, why not top 10? Top 25? Top 100? Top 480? Hell we can give everybody a trophy and tell them how great they are. I mean they already added trophys for the playoffs this year and rings for the summer league, maybe next we can do MVP of every game and champions of the offseason, of course then you have to change it top top 18 MVP of every game so no one who played feels left out and top 30 teams for great offseasons.

There should also be trophies for MVP of rounds 1 & 2 of the playoffs, and also the mvp for the losing teams as well. Maybe even Ben Simmons could snag one

I knew this thread was going to be in reference to Embiid before i even opened it.

why are Embiid fans so desperate for him to appear as an all time great? He needs to earn that in the playoffs
