[Wiretap] Pacers See Tyrese Haliburton As Their Next Reggie Miller

When Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton hears himself called "the face of the franchise" he still chuckles. But for the Pacers, that's how they see their young floor leader.

“We're gonna build our team around him,” Pacers GM Chad Buchanan told Basketball News. “We see him as hopefully being the next Reggie Miller. We had a Reggie Miller mural painted on a building in downtown Indianapolis, and I think our dream is that one day Tyrese will have (his own) up somewhere in downtown Indianapolis.”

Haliburton said he cried for nearly an hour when he was told about the trade sending him to Indiana from the Sacramento Kings. Then he connected with Pacers leadership who told him they planned to build the team around him, which helped him start to move forward.

Haliburton also said hearing from his peers around the NBA that they think the Kings made a mistake helped him move on from being traded. Haliburton added that he now feels at home, as he's a "Midwest kid", and the Pacers say their new star is “meshing together perfectly" with the Indiana community.

I gotta say, I agree with the Pacers. Haliburton is a definite keeper.

Since the trade, he averaged 17/4/10 + 2,4 stocks on 50/42/85 shooting splits.

He's my favorite to win the MIP award, and I'll go out on a limb and also say that he will:

- be an All-Star this coming season
- make multiple All-Star teams throughout his career
- make the Hall of Fame, barring some catastrophic injury

Yes, I love him THAT much as a player. I think he's fantastic.

I love his mental makeup. In his interviews you can see a sense of humbleness that some of the all-time greats have.

I love his skillset. I see some Penny Hardaway in his game. Some Brandon Roy. Some Grant Hill. I see some Rod Strickland as well.

The change of directions, the quick decisions with the ball. The "I don't look so skilled, yet I'm doing whatever I want on the court" feel. All of that, obviously, exacerbated with the "take it to the extremes" shooting skills we see in the current wave of players.

Give me more Haliburton for years to come, thank you very much, kind sir.

I'll get it out of the way and make the "I still can't believe Sacramento traded him" comment early.

But yeah, he's a keeper. I wouldn't be surprised if he was a multiple time All Star either.

The mural stuff I need to see to believe though. He's capable of being an amazing Pacer but with player movement these days it's just so rare to see someone spend their whole career with 1 team.

He looked like a young star in Sacramento, so yeah, he will certainly shine in the East. Indiana actually wants to win as well, so they will empower him.

I think the Pacers got a good rebuilding piece in Mathurin in the past draft, which I admitedly was not so high early on, but warmed up during the summer league.

Mathurin looked like a young Dwyane Wade in the SL. Very composed player, above average athleticism, amazing 1st step... though I think he's not as tall as his supposed 6'6''/6'7'' listed height, and questions remain about his all-around versatility at the pro level. But that will be easy to figure out in his first few weeks at the pros, I think.

However, the Pacers are still 1 or 2 pieces away for contending for homecourt in the East.

The better they hit the park on those pieces in the draft, the better the chances are that Haliburton will play for them for his whole career.

He'll be an allstar someday likely soon but I doubt Pacers will be competitive in the next 5-10 years like they were in the Reggie era

Hoping for the best for him. Was gutted when we traded him.

Love Tyrese Haliburton and like what the Pacers are saying but do you build around a PG in today’s NBA? Pacers should be in asset accumulation mode for 1-2 years, then see what you have. Haliburton is going to be a fantasy stud next season for sure though.

Good but certainly not a top end prospect. Like I don’t see his trajectory so far on the same level as a guy like Shai who had a significant jump up after leaving the clips to OKC. That’s just one example of young players I think have had a better showing around the same age range/position.

Reggie Miller? Kind of a confusing comparison. There's way more Steve Nash in Haliburton's game than Miller

It wasn't a skill comparison. Just a comparison on the impact they think/hope he will have on the franchise.

 40%+ from 3 every season at every level in his career says otherwise.

Maybe the Pacers treat Haliburton better and actually add talent around him. Reggie never had enough and everybody during that era knew Indy was limited.

Am I the only that thinks he'll be better?
Not saying he'll touch Reggie's legacy as the GOAT Pacer, but individually as a player.

I think he’s a better overall player.

Reggie is an all time great shooter: one of the all time top 3 shooters in my opinion.
Halliburton is a great PG. He’s a very good 3 point shooter but Reggie was special from 3.
Halliburton has amazing court vision and is a better distributor . He makes others around him better .

Huge mistake by SAC to trade him.

Uh Sabonis is better and may always be better, and definitely fits with Fox more (Fox looked like an all star post trade). That chapter isnt written
