It did not say if the money is going to charity or anything like that so what do you all think of players selling their championship rings?

If they're happy with their decision, so be it, but if they regret it later it's hard for me to sympathize, short of it being for some major reason (like needing money for surgery or to save their house or whatever).

On the one hand, it's just a piece of jewelry. On the other, it's a piece of jewelry that represents the pinnacle of your career achievement. That said, maybe it just doesn't mean that much to him. For all I know it could have been sitting in a box for decades not being touched.

Eh, it's obviously his call. I can't make someone cherish something if they don't. I'm sure he's still very proud of the championships and his work on them but he's probably got his own ways of carrying that it doens't have to manifest as him keeping those little metal souvenirs forever.

I'm also sort of assuming he's not destitute, that never seemed like his situation. I'm just hoping this doesn't mean he's come on hard times and is forced to sell things off. That's obviously a different situation.

I think those rings belong to him and he can do whatever he wants with them.

Beyond that, I only hope it's not because he's in financial difficulty.

Lebron should buy them all so he can have 1 more than Mike.

300k-400k is a good chunk of money....you could do a lot with that, buy a house, invest in business, etc.

if he was selling it for only 10-20k each then you could start questioning his financial situation

I have no issue with it. His playing days are over and he doesn't seem to be involved in the game.
Could honestly be like a child selling toys it cherished so dearly.

MJ/Kobe teammates can probably make good bank selling those rings. I doubt all role player rings are created equal.

If he is broke I kinda hope NBA steps in and bus them and put in some museum. Hate when stuff like that ends up in some private collection and never is seen again. Happens way too often to like classic racecars and such is bought up by some oil arab and is never seen again. I find it sad.

Same. I could imagine them being in some sort of display case at my house though. On the other hand, I feel like I've heard many interviews with Olympic athletes who say their medals are just in a box in the closet. Man, if I ever won an Olympic medal (and if I were single at the time) I'd be at the bar with it every day, and would find a way to bring it into every conversation.

The only reason he could be selling them is because he's broke? Maybe he just doesn't care about them and he'd rather have the money. Winning them may be what was important to him, not owning them for life and being buried with them.

I remember when the Raptors won their championship and there was talk that players that got traded at the deadline that season would get rings but they did not.

I'm guessing they would've had less of an attachment to the championship and would've been more likely to sell the ring which I assume the NBA does not approve of.

He’s made over $120m in his career - if he’s selling the rings he’s absolutely broke. Yes I’m willing to make that obvious leap

all them will sell so thats 400k after AH fees that's like 375k? Could be broke who knows for sure.

He is likely broke. I am under the belief that if you are forced to sell rare items that you cant just get back later, then you are in financial difficulties and had to make a tough decision. If you arent broke, sell your cars, your TVs, not your heirlooms.
