He can say whatever he wants in private. But doing so when cameras are recording you is just dumb and warrants the NBA to step in. At the end of the day Ant is going to be fine, but this should be expected.

Most companies can fire you for saying anything they deem worthy. The NBA is no different with fines.

He didn't get in trouble for joking with his friends or something. He posted in on instagram. And yes, NBA contracts absolutely have clauses where players can be fined for making public statements that damage the team or league. They don't want anybody boycotting games or any sponsors pulling advertising.

The 1st Amendment is about what the government can do to punish or regulate your speech in the United States. The NBA is not the government.
The NBA has standards of conduct, and can punish you for violating those standards. However, there are contracts that establish these things, and these contracts have processes to them, and those processes can sometimes be challenged in court.

To further clarify, means the government cannot pass laws that force or restrict your thoughts on anything.

**don't feel bad, I made the same mistake as you early in my law school career, albeit to much more embarrassing ridicule by the professor who just happened to be the late Henry Thomas who was a well known NBA player agent before he died.
