OT: NFL Ends Pro Bowl(NBA Next?)

I wonder at one point will the NBA just do away with the All-Star game and entire exhibition format as well. The NBA has tried to switch up their game more than others but their ratings also are declining too. I think the days of All-Star games and film/tv/music awards being any type of ratings draws whatsoever are officially done in this modern era.

To be fair, the pro bowl was always the worst all star game out there. Nobody ever cared about it.

The Pro Bowl died when the great Sean Taylor died. It hasn't been the same since. The NBA should keep the all-star game as it's still enjoyable.

The NBA All Star Game has way more cultural cache than the Pro Bowl, which isn't even interesting to most football fans I know. The All Star Game in the NBA has become kind of a Black culture Super Bowl as well being of greater interest to a larger population than the Pro Bowl. And the players really seem to care about participating. Obviously contract incentives are a part of it, but some really seem to want to be there and that will help keep it around.

Good. They literally turned it into touch football. The NBA All Star game, as lazy as it can be, is still infinitely better.

All Star games do not work in physical contact sports. They should just do a NFC v AFC softball game.

The NBA All-Star game does a good job at generating interest among kids and among international fans who may not get to see their favorite stars play that often.

For everything the NFL has succeeded at, it has zero appeal internationally and the pro bowl doesn't register on the radar of any of it's fans whether young or old.

NBA All-Star weekend is way more of an event than the Pro Bowl is. Exhibition football just doesn't work

The more physically brutal the sport, the worse any all-star exhibition game will be. The NBL's was always the worst, followed by the NHL, then the nBA, with MLB the least bad.

The other issue that's been hurting all of them is the availability to watch any player on any team play meaningful regular season games. In the NBA, if you weren't on the Lakers, Celtics or Sixers in the 80's, you weren't on national TV except the all-star game. So you didn't want to play with no effort and make NBA fans across the country think you weren't actually good. Now every game is available if you care enough to a player's reputation isn't hurt by not trying in an exhibition.

I'll always remember when Pats rookie RB Robert Edwards majorly tore up his knee at a flag football event during Pro Bowl weekend. Was so bad that they considered amputation at the time. It cut short his NFL career and it was remarkable that he made a comeback at all. The whole thing was just a dumb idea all around and they canceled flag football.

As to the real Pro Bowl game, I don't think players cared much for it. They just liked the free trip to Hawaii their families got.

But yeah, it's a dumb game. It's basically a game at the end of the year that nobody wants to play in and won't include players from the teams in the Superbowl. Completely pointless.

They should replace it with a G-League all star game. You know they'd be going all out on defense, trying to show teams they should get picked up after the break.

As mentioned above, the most serious injury to ever occur during Pro Bowl weekend ironically happened during a flag football game. Was basically a Shaun Livingston level injury.

The only special event I enjoyed in football was the QB skill challenge (not even sure what time of the year it was held), and even that was not amazing. The All Star Weekend for basketball is a part of culture and a pretty big event. It is not amazing, but the 3pt contest is always a show and the Dunk contest gives us a chance to see some truly special stuff (MJ/Nique, J Rich, VC, Lavine/Gordon are all etched in the memory of everyone who saw them). The game itself is whatever, but generally pretty fun and the elam ending has helped.

The same goes for MLB by the way. The NFL was just never meant to have an All Star game. It's simply too violent of a sport to risk injury with anything that resembles an actual game.

I like this idea. Or at least go to International vs US because I haven't watched an all-star game since '14(would've watched '15 but SNL 40 was on). But maybe that has more to do with my age.

The difference is that the Pro Bowl sucks and the All Star Game is fun to watch.
