MLS clubs are as valuable as the 7th most normal company in the world. Impressive.

Edit: The headline said billion but it's actually million according to the article.

It's $582 million based on article. I think title has a typo.

That’s obviously a typo in the title. Should be millions .

I’m actually surprised at how high some of these clubs are in valuations .

projected growth. Prediction is MLS will become major sport in US this half century and has a minority chance of reaching the NBA/MLB tier.

Surprised it's even as high as it is even with the typo corrected. i don't even know a single person who watches US soccer outside of national team games\, all the soccer/football fans I know watch international play.

Not shocked by this. Actually went to a Real Salt Lake game a couple weeks back. That place was popping. It seemed like they probably came close to selling out standing room only seats it was so crowded. It was my first MLS game and it ended up being a pretty fun night I must say.

When I lived in DC, I used to go to as many DC United games as I could. It was a great atmosphere both in and out of the stadium and reasonably affordable.

The problem for the league is that once I moved out of the area, I basically stopped caring. I'd always watched European soccer, and when I was watching only online, I was much more likely to watch the higher quality product. It will be interesting to see how the league grows.

RealGM WT: Average MLS team worth FAR more than average NBA team

Average MLS team now worth $582 billion! This far outweighs the average NBA team. I know soccer is popular worldwide, but wow! This is really surprising. Soccer is taking over.

The league itself is 26 years old and has obviously seen pretty substantial growth. Naysayers, such as yourself, would have deemed these valuations impossible far less than 20 years ago, yet here we are. Things take time. The NBA, at the same age, had 17 teams and looked nothing like it does today.

Yup, the way I think about it is this. 100 years ago the 3 biggest sports were:

Baseball
Boxing
Horseracing

Horseracing is a fringe sport that people only care about for 3 races. Boxing is a dying sport that has been surpassed in popularity by other combat sports.

Only baseball is still a mainstream sport. And that sport has decayed in popularity over the last 3- decades. Popularity changes.

Culture changes. Rock has now gone the sway of swing music and jazz.

Obviously European soccer is a better product, but I'm telling you what, watching MLS games is actually a lot of fun. Even though it's a higher level of play overseas, if given a choice, I'll usualy watch a MLS game. I really don't have a favorite team (even though I should be a fan of the Revolution), so when I watch games, I really don't care who wins, thus I can enjoy both sides of the game.

More than I would have guessed. Almost NHL numbers.

That's pretty good. The NFL being terrible about player safety has made soccer a much more attractive sport for kids, which will translate to more interest

People have speculated that boxing is dying but it's still very lucrative and pays its middle and top shelf guys better.

MLS teams are fairly popular in their home cities and soccer is more popular with young people than baseball/hockey are. MLS has grown a lot recently.

These validations will only go up. Most people who hate on MLS are either Eurosnobs or people that just don't like soccer. One day, it'll be the best non-Europe soccer league.

i'm actually shocked at that. the average MLS team valuation is more than 7 NHL teams, despite the league being like 80 years younger. the average NHL team is worth $865M.

unless you can buy one of the original six NHL teams (they're all in the top 9 for value) then it's pretty much a no-brainer to own an MLS team over an NHL team.
