OT: AI has advanced to the point of overtaking sports journalism

I don't know if any of you are following the recent few days of Chat GPT, but it is now almost accurate enough to completely replace a sports writer's job. A lot of journalists are freaking out about this. Sure, its still a bit robotic, but with a few more months of training, I can see the Associated Press just using AI to write nearly every article.

I just asked the AI to write for me a post about why the Hornets should tank this season, and it spit out this in less than a minute:

The Charlotte Hornets have struggled in recent years, failing to make the playoffs since the 2016-2017 season. In order to rebuild their team and become contenders again, they should consider tanking for the highly-touted prospect, Victor Wembanyama.

Wembanyama is a 7-foot-3-inch center from France who has been dominating the junior ranks in Europe. He has exceptional size and length, as well as a versatile skill set that allows him to score in a variety of ways. He is an excellent rim protector and has shown the ability to hit outside shots, making him a potential matchup nightmare for opposing teams.

Tanking for Wembanyama would involve the Hornets intentionally losing games in order to improve their chances of getting a high draft pick. This strategy has been used by several teams in the past, and while it may not be popular with fans, it can be an effective way to rebuild a struggling franchise.

In the short term, tanking would likely result in the Hornets being one of the worst teams in the league. However, in the long term, it could pay off by giving them a chance to draft a player like Wembanyama who could become the cornerstone of their franchise.

If the Hornets are able to land Wembanyama, they would have a talented young center to build around. He would join a young core that already includes players like Devonte' Graham and Miles Bridges, giving the team a strong foundation for the future.

In conclusion, tanking for Victor Wembanyama may not be the most popular decision, but it could be the best decision for the long-term success of the Charlotte Hornets. By intentionally losing games, they could improve their chances of drafting a player who has the potential to become a star and help the team return to contention.

Notice it said Devonte Graham, this is because as of right now the AI I used is only accurate to the world as of Jan 2021, but they are working on that.

Similar to AI art which is trending in recent weeks, it will be almost impossible for teachers to differentiate between written essays and AI generated essays.

I predict that within one year, AI will be strong enough that that automatically have detailed conversations with posters here on RealGM. They will be among us...

Seems like the dumbed down hot take culture is probably making it easier

"I predict that within one year, AI will be strong enough that that automatically have detailed conversations with posters here on RealGM. They will be among us..."

Sure but are you going to volunteer to code that Machine Learning program into RealGM without pay? lol.

Also who cares about sports journalism. The facts of the given situation never really change in a year based on records and such, it's more about a humans reactions to that situation.

Podcasts are where it's at. Or more detailed takes into the character of the player and the team and what the journalists see as they interview and guess that the team is going through or a deeper dive into the Xs and Os on the court.

Things like the article above... sure it should be replaced because it's nugatory. Go ahead and automate it. Bad teams should tank. Got it.

Cool, maybe the AI column writers won't be afraid to look back and grade their opinions.

Honestly that sounds like an 8th grade paper which means half of ESPN's on air talent couldn't do it better.

We're only going to get more journalists stealing more ideas from here as they begin to realise that their advantage against ChatGPT is creativity and new ideas.

I wonder if ChatGPT could be fed writing from realGM?

Sports Journalism has historically been the lowest and most meaningless form of journalism. Replacing them with AI would be terrific.

Though what it generates can seem dumbed down and simple. I think writers can use it to help their articles. You can easily create outlines to work off of. You can get ideas about analogies and jokes. Or can use it if you have writers block or have trouble putting a thought into written format. I've been playing around with GPT Chat recently and it is mind blowing indeed.

I'm a lawyer and I expect that a good portion of legal work will become automated in the next few decades. Hopefully we will eventually be reduced to meeting clients, interviews, oral arguments, and maybe case strategy. A good chunk of discovery work is already done by AI.

Soon AI will be creating threads showing why certain robot players are exposed.

This is just early hours. after months, or years of machine learning and training, it will be legitimately scary what it can do.

LOL if you think AI is going to let you enrich yourself at its expense.

That said, this OP level of a non-take is probably on par with the typical mediocre blog post--i.e. "Tanking for Wembayana might turn out to be a good decision. Huge, if true." Right up there with "This team will be competitive if there are no injuries."

AI looks smart mostly because humans are so dumb.

Just reading that, it sounds like it was written by an above average poster on RealGM. It may even pass for something written for a seventh grade English assignment.

Gonna be lots of vaporware... I think a better strategy would be to invest in the things that they all use (Amazon webservers, GPUs, etc).

That’s like saying AI has advanced to the point of overtaking WNBA basketball.
