Silver wants a female coach in the league...
Adam Silver wants a female head coach in the league now. How do you guys feel about that. Is Silver too woke?
There's not even enough female coaches in the WNBA why should we have one in the men's league?
Your thoughts, please...

If the individual is talented, their gender, age, race, religion is irrelevant. But just having a female HC for the sake of it is silly, IMHO

He should step up and be a leader and hire a female deputy commissioner. Or he should resign and recommend a woman take his place as the commish. Leadership starts from the top

I think there will be a female GM before a coach.

Has there been a female coach in the WNBA so dominant that she can cross over? I also understand the ideal but as a charity it seems odd with there being a women's league.

And the purpose of having a female coach is for what? Gender equality?

Regardless of gender, if qualified why not. There are male coaches in the WNBA

Re: Silver wants a female coach in the league...
What he actually said:
"If I were out looking to hire a coach right now, I'd say there's a market irregularity, there's clearly a bias in the system against women," Silver said. "Now part of it is there's no shortcuts to developing a new pool of candidates, and that's what we're going through now. That's I think why you're seeing, you know, seven female assistants because still you want people to be developed, to come up the ranks, to sort of learn the profession, learn it in the assistant ranks and then work their way up.
"But so, I don't want to put a precise number on it. I'd say, I would be hugely disappointed if, certainly, in five years, we haven't seen our first female head coach in the NBA."

This will make all the usual people big mad.
But there is no problem here despite their forthcoming efforts to create one.

Silver should stop talking and take action himself then. All he needs to do is transition to female then get good enough at coaching basketball to get hired by an NBA team as a coach

Re: Silver wants a female coach in the league...
We need a female commissioner
On a serious note, women getting opportunities to head coach in the league would be a good thing. But there will be a lot of political pressure on the time to hire the first woman HC in the NBA. Essentially can't fire her if the team struggles. And any opposing candidates will have people trying to tear them down.
Don't forget, Becky Hammon even being in consideration for the blazers position created a wave of deranged feminists and white knights trying to character assassinate Chauncey Billups for something that nobody even brought up again in his time as a player, or the various times he was rumored to be in discussion for GM positions. Who by the way, is doing a fantastic job right now.

Silver is saying that the reason we don't have a female headcoach is most likely due to systemic bias, and that if teams made rational decisions there should be a female coach in the NBA.

The usual people are going to have a cow over this, which pretty much proves Silver's point.

Huge bias, 1000x more males interested in basketball at that level and only 30 jobs. It'd be nuts not to have a female coach tho... because biases

The inverse will happen too, if a team hires a female HC a lot of people will be rooting for her to fail and when she does they'll use that as proof women shouldn't coach non-women sports teams.
So teams will face a lot of pressure to both not hire and not fire them. Which is the biggest reason women aren't going to get any serious chances any time soon.

Hes clearly invoking identity politics, so fine. I think it makes more sense to see a successful coach go from wnba to NBA but if he is grooming one for marketing reasons he may sell more tix to little girls, who do like watching the men.

You need to be THAT GOOD to be the first at something, so that you don’t fail and potentially close the door for others, and that’s a lot of pressure on that first individual.
Thing is, I think it’s very likely Becky is THAT GOOD. I hope she gets a shot soon. I’d take her for my team next year.

Yep, I was worried if the Blazers hired Becky since it would be a high pressure situation, and any sort of trouble would get a bunch of heavily biased people claiming no woman could ever handle the job.
Crap Chauncey's first season was filled with a lot of problems, and despite that he never had massive hate against him. I think if Becky had the same situation it would have been far worse. I do want to see a female head coach someday, but I think a more low pressure situation of a very young team would work better.
One reason Billups might have gotten the nod over Becky was that Dame was a huge fan of the Billups hire. I don't think Dame was giving them an ultimatum or that he had all the power, but when quite possibly the best player to ever be a Blazer wants a coach over another one you probably listen.

I would actually be fine with replacing Silver with a black female commisoner on account of him being trash. Why not.
