After 20 years, do you consider LeBron a “Good shooter”?

Post#1 » by 1993Playoffs » Tue Jan 17, 2023 8:51 pm

It’s so weird after all this time I’m still not sure if I can
I’ve seen him hit deep ass 3s with ease while also struggling to hit a mid range shot. Maybe the most inconsistent jumper of the goat level perimeter players( or magic) lol.

He is decent. He isn't "good." You can see the decline in his FT shooting, you can see the Kobe-like mediocre 3pt shooting, you can see the acceptable-but-unremarkable middie, and the inconsistent perimeter 2. He's not a particularly impressive shooter, but he also isn't horrible.

Not sure it matters.

Even if his percentages for 3fg and ft are slightly below league standards... the greatness of his game is that he can score in many different ways (and do a lot of other stuff at an elite level).

But he’s had such high peaks in those areas in seasons, playoffs etc, where he looks Better than even “good” that’s what so weird to me

I think he was good for a period of time but even then he was still streaky. Shooting drops off with age because legs don't hold up as well over the course of running around much less playing 35+mpg like LeBron still does. You don't reach the %'s that LeBron reached for a period of time without being a good shooter. Not great but good.

Yeah, he hits a hot streak as well as anyone, and he's had a season in Miami on smaller volume where he was over 40%, which was a little wild. His mechanics aren't the best and he's added mass, which has clearly hurt him. You see similar declines over time from some bigs like Shaq and Wilt and what-not where they hit the league more competent and grew worse over time. Lebron these past two seasons has been shooting FTs at a level we hadn't seen since 2014, of course, which is nice to see.

What do you mean "after all this time"?

Why would anything be different over time given that he was never an elite mid range or 3pt shooter before, nor is he currently.

He has always been a decent (but not great) shooter, but he is a very efficient scorer. Nothing has really changed.

He was a good shooter in 2014, not sure what happened after. Definitely not a bad shooter though, you definitely don't want to leave him wide open.

Below average to Average.

Even his best season was due to shot selection more than actual shooting touch.

I would say solid, somewhat reliable from mid range. Three point shooting very streaky and unreliable, but not terrible.

He was. He hasn't been "very efficient" in quite some time. He's on a nice stretch right now, though, so we shall see what comes the rest of the season.

Basically this. His midrange is pretty decent, but he is so streaky from 3 at this point. He's either gonna miss 5 in a row or make 5 in a row. Not much consistency.

Given the defensive attention he gets, I'd accept someone saying above average. But that's where I'd draw the line and I'd say he's more or less an average shooter. More proof that while you can improve aspects of shooting you never trained for, people all seem to have ceilings.

Superstars have a way of making clutch shots…nobody wants to get hit with a Le****you 3 that’s for sure.

I honestly don’t know though, and I guess that means he’s a good shooter, but not a great one. He just needs a decent jumpshot to keep defenses on their toes, it’s easier to generate better shots that way, whether if it’s he that takes it or another teammate.

LBJs shooting is reliable, dependable even. Wouldn’t go as far as call it elite, but then…. He has myriad ways to score. He has improved his range thru the years, but also the mechanics and fluidity of the shot.

Seems at odd with the season, and with his 3pt shooting in general.

Compared to his rookie season, sure, but he hasn't meaningfully improved his shooting ability since 2013, and has seemed to noticeably regress since then, in fact.

To me he feels as average as possible as possible as a shooter. Not bad, but not good either.

His shooting is too volatile to be considered a 'good shooter'. He can be very streaky. Although I suppose you could say that he's good enough because his shot still has to be respected and that opens up other avenues for scoring. Nobody treats him now, as the Spurs did in the 2007 Finals.

Compared to Jordan, James is only a couple ticks lower… and Jordan was considered both reliable and dependable
