How often does Ja Morant violate the rules of basketball?

Post#1 » by Tracymcgoaty » Sat Jan 21, 2023 9:35 am

I leave it up to people who know the rules to a tee to judge for themselves.

He had one which i thought was a blatant and obvious carry against the Lakers like it was ridiculous how it wasn't called.

You can't judge anything off of slow motion because that makes everything nearly look like a travel because you are literally stopping or slowing up a video

The question should have been how many times he doesn't violate the basketball rules ... Like maybe 5 times in the whole game.

I was watching Bol Bol's plays few nights ago and my conclusion was it was easier to count legal dribbles than illegal ones. Basically 4/5th of his dribbles were blatant carry.

With Morant it's basically the same, probably not to as extreme degree but on other hand he plays a lot more with the basketball thus it's more striking.

This to me is ridiculous when people start to tell me how today's players are more skilled than few decades ago. Skill hasn't changed at all. Only enforcement of rules has changed.

Why is Morant so pathetic at dribbling? Is he trying to make a fool of himself? Or isn't he good enough to score without carrying?

Its not a bug, mistake or error - its the main feature. You want "exciting" play and now you get it. Once everyone does it the Overton Window will be moved and soon it will be 5 steps before traveling will be the new outrage after you fully accept 4 steps being OK.

You wanted it, you got it.

the travelling isnt out of the normal even for college basketball or fiba, but the carrying is a lot. In fairness, he is getting called for it once every few games, but I think in the playoffs, hes vulnerable to refs locking in on it like they do with harden/joel foul baiting. Just like teams, the officials get ready for their matchup and carrying the ball has obviously been a point of emphasis as he has been called for it at least a half dozen times that ive seen.

as someone who really watches the rules stuff though, yes hes carrying the ball more than when people were complaining about KD, or iverson, or any player ive seen. that hezi he does to gain speed legitimately isnt effictive without the carry because by carrying the ball, the defender doesnt know if hes going to shoot or continue his dribble.

Stars have been getting away with carries and travels for time, this is nothing new. Officials target the no-name guys more often than not.

The travelling isn't any different than what other guys get away with.

The carrying is on another level though. Not saying he's alone in doing it, but he's a habitual offender. He puts guys on skates regardless, but when he's carrying like in the clips shown, defenders don't stand a chance.

I think carrying league-wide has gotten out of control. I'd like to see it be the next point of emphasis to reign it back in before it's completely accepted as just a part of the game like other things have become. I'm not talking about lazy carries where guys are just bringing the ball up the floor, I'm talking about the carries that get defenders contesting and then blown by because the ball handler basically gathers like a jumpshot before quickly driving.

It's a slick move, but it's also basically unguardable and defenders already have a tough enough time out there without a literal cheatcode becoming the norm.

I don't watch enough Ja to know how often he gets called for it, but if other posters are right and he's catching whistles for it then that's a good thing and it should be the same for everyone else. Leave it for the and-1 tour.

I like Dev but I find Dev calling out travels and carries kinda ironic. He's a trainer, here is him training:

I don't know Dev, you're traveling on your moves and you're teaching the moves to the youngsters, so are you in the position to be the travel and carry snitch?

Slow motion is biased, especially with ball handling, so it makes it look worse than it is, but Ja is a pretty bad offender of carrying. Jordan Poole I would say is worse.

I’m a Warriors fan, and I agree 100%.

I’ll also add that Poole has been getting called on it a lot more this year— has that been the case with Ja?

I’m legitimately asking…

Yes, that's why I'm like, okay Dev, you're not wrong about some of these carries, but you're a trainer who is much older than a guy like Ja.

You have been doing this before he was in the NBA, you're pretty egregious on some of these carries, and you're teaching the youngsters. I don't know if you can put yourself in the position of "what is basketball coming to" , because you might be contributing to it.

In addition to traveling/ carrying all the time I was watching him shove-off with his off arm all night while driving too.
