Do you really need skill ,athleticism to do well in this era? Plumlee avgn 16 and 11 the past month

Mason Plumlee a slow un athletic “plumber” is putting up great stats the last month or so. I thought these kind of bigs were fazed out? I was told that these kind of players will be dog ish in this era blah blah. Him putting up these kind of stats tells me that ALOT of plumbers from the prior era will do good in this era. Why? Because BBIQ and knowing where to be on the basketball court trumps being super skilled, athletic, being saucy etc.
Thoughts ?

The Plumlee's were all athletic. I know Mason is in his 30's now, but he didn't just lose it all as soon as his age got a three in front of it lol. Then add that he also has the athletic ability of, you know, height....
Mason also for a big like him has always been a skilled passer and could put the ball on the floor adequately to move into position to make passes.

Mason Plumlee is not as athletic as he used to be . Cmon now. He can pass the ball but he’s not out here shooting 3s and taking dudes off the dribble from the perimeter.

I think numbers in this era are very inflated and averaging 20 ppl now doesn't mean what it did 8 or 9 years ago.
I also think athleticism really comes down to this as far as thresholds you need to meet positionally.
1. Can you consistently gain an advantage over your defender via speed/quickness/strength? Get an advantage = getting your shoulder past them on your way to the rim, or overpowering/outmaneuvering in the post.
2. Are you strong/quick laterally/north/south to stay in front of the person you're defending? Do you have the height to not be completely overwhelmed?
3. Can you finish among the trees? Are you able to get buckets at the rim consistently? Can you get to the free throw line regularly?
So if you meet two of those three things, you're athletic enough for the NBA, and if you're all three, you're probably a great athlete.
Plumleys are all great athletes.

Even if Mason has lost a step from his prime, he still is a very athletic big man. Mason and Miles were top tier athletes in their prime. Go look at both brothers combine numbers, pretty crazy that strong 7 footers put up those numbers. The brothers combined have made over 120 million dollars in the NBA. Their best attribute has always been strong 7 footers who were great athletes. Athleticism is kind of the first thing you think of when you think of the Plumlees.
Ive also started watching a good amount of Hornets games because of Mark Williams finally getting some burn. Definitely wouldnt call his play this year as a slow unathletic big. He still runs the court better than the majority of big men. He still is plenty explosive and compared to most bigs now, he is pretty strong. At minimum Plumlee would be considered a good athlete at the big man spot as of today. Also just because he cant shoot doesnt mean he isnt skilled. He has a solid handle for a big and is a very good passer.

Well, we went from him being a slow unathletic plumber (6'11 one btw) to, well he's not as athletic as he used to be.
Your premise is that bigs like this are fazed out of the NBA, so he shouldn't be around. Problem is that Plumlee doesn't fit the description. Plumlee at 32 is more athletic than those bigs in their primes, and his passing and ball handling ability for a big is quite good.
Do you know who is also in the NBA? Zubac. Is he a super athletic big or mighty skilled? No, but he's definitely not a slow plodding big.

If you leave out his first two years in Brooklyn, once he got more touches the dude averaged 3 APG in under 24 MPG. Per 36 that's probably more than some combo guards in this league. I don't think an unskilled Center could do that.

Ivica Zubac is another slow footed big man that rebounds and scores inside. I can name countless players from the 80s and 90s that do the same thing. These debates that casuals create about players back then being not good , or skilled is hog wash. I can name a couple of slow footed big men that are putting up great stats in this era.

I think anyone in the g-league would come in and destroy 99.9 percent of players not in their league, let a lone the NBA. so this thread is silly. An average player/bench warmer is still insane in skills/ability compared to most players in the world.
If Plumlee came into your local gym for some pickup, he would probably look like a prime Wilt Chamberlin to you. It's easy to look at a TV and generalize their skills sets and size, but they are a elite class of like a few hundred people, out of millions of players.

My thought is you never really watched him play.
The dude can't shoot from long range but he's incredibly athletic by realgm standards.

In passing yes, I’m referring to him being as skilled as a Lauri markanen, Embiid, Jokic etc
Plumlee is putting up the best stats in his whole career possibly. Without shooting any 3s , crossing people on the perimeter with fancy dribbles, dunking on everybody’s head.
