Look at the trade deadline. it's dead. Just not enough sellers. For what? The number 8 through 10 teams are first round playoff elimination near guaranteed. So what is the benefit?

I don't see any benefit to the play in. The league is less competitive because the true competitors have less opportunity to make trades and shake up the top of the competition.

Over all just a bad idea to make a few bucks more

It definitely has made regular season more competitive because teams will try to finish in top6 instead of worrying about the possibility of missing playoffs by finishing in play-in spots

I mean obviously the premise of the thread is wrong.

The play-in is a ridiculous premise, if you finish in the 7th or 8th seed after 82 games you should be in the playoffs. It's idiotic that you then have to win the spot you earned in additional games.

Trade deadline is on the 9th. There’s many trades in the works some eventuate some don’t that’s sports.

Some get done minutes before the deadline too btw.

It’s a draft pick problem. Just make the bottom 14 have equal chance from picks 1-14. Now there should be little incentive to go the full tank. Also top picks don’t equal success. Culture >>>

I think it has done exactly the opposite and your evidence points in that direction. Fewer teams are selling because they see an actual chance to make the playoffs. And one reason we're seeing tightly packed records rather than super good and super bad records is that a whole range of teams are playing hard each night. In past years, A lot of teams would have given up by now and traded assets to tanks, but the reworking of the lottery and playin has given them an incentive to keep competing.

In what other leagues have you *earned* a playoff spot by finishing in the top half of the conference? The generosity of the NBA playoff system gets even more stark if you equate wildcards slots with play-in slots.

The game has always been about wins. If you have more wins in the RS, you get a higher seed, in the playoffs- you get the title.

Arbitrarily inflating the value of certain RS games over others is unfair.

A team with 39 wins should always beat out a same conference team with 37 wins.

I don't have an issue with a league that says you have to finish in the top 6, out of 15 teams in each conference, to be guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. The idea that you can finish lower than 6th and still play your way in seems pretty generous. The Cavs would've been an 8th seed last year and I still don't have an issue with it. The reality is that if you don't finish in the top 6, your chances of advancing aren't that great anyway.
