Jayson Tatum is clutch
I was hoping someone else might make a thread about this so I wouldn't have to go homer on y'all haha. But alas.
This is pretty dang impressive...
Only player in NBA history to shoot over 50% on game-tying or go-ahead field goals in the last 24 seconds of the 4th quarter. Jayson Tatum shoots 51.7% FG on clutch shots, ranking 1st out of 155 players attempting 25+ FGs to tie or take the lead in the final 24 seconds since 1996.
Most game-tying or go-ahead baskets in the final 5 seconds of the 4th quarter or overtime in the last 5 seasons (9). Additionally, since his rookie season, he has hit 11 such shots in the last 5 seconds of a game, the most in the NBA in that span.

Clutch shots are made in the playoffs when the pressure is on and the games truly matter. Nothing against Tatum who might even have better clutch numbers in the postseason(too lazy to check), I just think stats like this are almost meaningless.

I'm very confused by this point of view. I can't imagine how making game winning shots is meaningless. Is the point not to win the game?

Credit to Tatum for his unprecedented clutch shot making and credit to his coaches who seem to actually run plays and not just iso him.

Re: Jayson Tatum is clutch
That’s impressive and a worthy call out don’t worry lol. Not shocking though.
He has the frame and game that lends itself to final moments. Long/skilled players who are able to get to their mid range spot are at such a massive advantage when a team is acting too tepid to actually run their offense (risking turnovers from passing/movement) and go full iso.
Tatum/Luka/KD/Kawhi etc were made for that moment.
Having a stacked roster also helps in this scenario as he’s not going to be blasted with help D like say a young Lebron was. Super impressive #’s regardless. He’s a baller. He was figured out/exploited in the Finals last year (of course the rumors of him playing hurt… though he looked athletic as all hell a myriad of times in the series…), so this is a nice ratchet in that theme.

It isn’t a stat to be overlooked but posters do bring up a good point, it when we see him have success in the playoffs people will then acknowledge his greatness

Tatum's regular season stats were great last year too, but he shot .367 in the NBA Finals, so hard to place much importance on regular season.

The ones he misses are when there is no timeout and he goes ISO and doesn’t get a good look. I feel super confident in him out of a timeout though. Brad, Ime and Joe all seemed to put him in great spots in those situations. The non timeout plays are a worry though.

He's 24 and has led his team to 3 ECFs and 1 Finals.

He's played 422 regular season games so far in his career and the sample size is still only 26 attempts. Of course it's better to make them but even if he only made 30% of those shots, meaning if he went 8 for 26 they would have lost only 5 extra games over 5 full seasons worth of games which makes the whole thing pretty meaningless.
Not to mention it's insanity to say 5 shots over 422 games are the difference between being clutch and not clutch, especially when being clutch is much more than that imo.
As I already said, not even talking about Tatum here, I just have no idea why people pay so much attention to such miniscule sample sizes unless they happen in the playoffs where every game matters and seasons are on the line.

I'm kind of a hater, but I vaguely remember him chucking and missing a lot on crunch time. Crazy stats.

Not meaningless at all. Missing one of those shots last year probably means Bucks gets home court advantage in the playoffs and they probably beat us and Tatum doesn’t go through to the finals gaining valuable experience. It’s all relative and it all matters

You gotta keep this stuff to yourself man. Next time Jayson bricks a clutch shot somebody bumps this and it's a whole thing.
156-1 Celtics are frauds when pressure is put on them. They would have been toast if Luka was not stupid enough to foul himself out. Enjoy this ONE finals win. There will never be another with the Js and the Celtics cant afford stacked team.
Re: Jayson Tatum is clutch
Haha its threads like this why the NBA's regular season has become such a watered down product. Talking heads put down regular season accomplishments, former players do it and so do so many fans. No wonder teams and players sit out like double digit games now, its because no one cares about them.
Hey here is this truly elite 2 way player who is making clutch game winning shots (kind of the point of games and all) and so many people automatically put it down like its pointless. Its also to the point now where its not just, "hey this means nothing, lets see him do it in the playoffs". Well Tatum has been elite in the playoffs, here are Tatum's numbers in the playoffs over the last 3 years, 26/8/6 on 56 TS%, again while also being an elite defender who defends the opposing team's best wing player. Hell the dude was good enough to win the ECF MVP last year. But no he had a bad Finals series and that's all that matters and we shouldnt care what he is doing in the regular season and in the playoffs just because he didnt have a good first series in the Finals.
The funny thing is, most players his age dont even come close to making the Finals. But the fact he led his team there is now viewed as a negative for him.
