Taylor Jenkins secretly one of the better coaches in the league

Post#1 » by BoogieTime » Wed Mar 22, 2023 11:50 am

Even a fully studded Grizzlies team should not on paper be the 2nd seed IMO. They overachieved IMO last year as well. Counting all the injuries and suspensions and different configurations of lineups Memphis has had, their record is impressive.

Agreed, but I don't think it's a secret.

He is a really good at managing personalities, getting all the players to pull together in the same direction (i.e. keeping them united on the team goal rather than individual goals), and the staff he has put together is tremendously good at developing the talent that the front office has drafted.

With that said, he's not perfect. He tends to stick to set rotations regardless of how players are playing in individual games and play incredibly deep rotations (10 or 11 guys even in close games), which leads to Ja, JJJ, and Bane playing less minutes than most teams' best players. As the postseason approaches, he is trimming the rotation and giving the main guys more minutes. In interviews, he speaks in incredibly opaque corporate terms that ultimately convey next to nothing of substance, which to be fair is more or less a trend of our entire front office and right up his alley as a Wharton business school alum - I think he could be more candid if he chose to and simply doesn't at the direction of the front office.

He's a very good coach, and in a "behind the scenes" style video when the Bucks were on a road trip to Memphis (I think last season) Gianni did tell one of the Grizzlies' players "We miss him, let him come back to Milwaukee" or something to that effect.
"Wes, Hill, Ibaka, Allen, Nwora, Brook, Pat, Ingles, Khris are all slow-mo, injury prone ... a sandcastle waiting for playoff wave to get wrecked. A castle with no long-range archers... is destined to fall. That is all I have to say."-- FOTIS

He was voted in the top 6 of our recent Coaching Survey. Pretty sure he's now widely recognized as one of the league's best coaches.

Memphis is going through it right now but just righted their ship and went 6-1. They've gone 9-5 since all-star break and aren't letting go of that 2 seed.

What I like about Jenkins coaching is how obvious the individual players buy into a team identity and style. He encourages everyone to be really aggressive and stay in attack mode. While this leads to some bad shots, the overall effect is some extra rim pressure and rebounding even when they don't have the personnel for it. The Grizzlies are always ready to shove the ball down their opponents throats.

He still very young aswell.

Last Year playoff Kerr and Mike Brown really took it to him and you could see the lack of experience. He was reaction to what Kerr did and never really got a chance to attack back especially after JA went down with his injury.

Alot of people keep talking about the lack of veterans in the Grizzlies roster but coaching staff is also young.

He's good, but he has to do a better job controlling the personalities on his team.

I've voted him higher than he has ended up on every one of the coaching rankings. Even with highly talented players, young teams rarely are able to put it together as fast as the Grizzlies have. I think it is a combination of Memphis' scouting department and head coach. Both are top tier. They draft the right guys and Jenkins does an excellent job putting them in positions to win.
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

Imagine thinking this is a "secret" in 2023...........They looked like the 96 Bulls whenever Ja didnt play last season. Gave Warriors their toughest series in title run with Ja out half the series. Even won one of the playoff games by 40.

Yeah, it is a secret. He's a dynamo. And has done more with less and I'm unsure how he's doing it.

He's not heralded how he should be. Should widely be regarded as a top top tier coach, but wouldnt be considered that on a random twitter search

Its not a secret he's a good coach, but "one of the better", meaning top shelf. and the job he's done should be studied

Exactly! Overachieving is far from being the case with this ream like some of the responses have suggested.
They're a legit contender for the title.

Did you even watch the series? The team looked better without Ja.

There is nothing else to say, I don’t think we need many additional threads on it

Every year he is.

Why was anyone talking about his job earlier in the season?

I was really impressed with the Grizzlies tonight, we’re controlling a lot of the game versus the Kings

Don't underestimate Toumas Lisalo's (Grizzlies assistant coach) impact and influence. The video is worth watching. This doesn't mean all credit should go to him, but some changes were made this season upon his arrival.

Here's a thinking basketball video on them too.

So many people who attain the heights of power in this culture—celebrities, for instance—have to make a show of false humility and modesty, as if they got as far as they did by accident and not by ego or ambition.
