Should the Celtics consider trading Jaylen Brown or Jayson Tatum?

Post#1 » by facothomas22 » Mon May 22, 2023 2:49 am

With them now being down 3-0 in the series, it's looking like their season is likely over. A huge part of why the Celtics have struggled against the Heat is because their two stars in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown haven't played like true stars in this series. The question the Celtics Front would need to ask themselves is that do they really to commit to giving both Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum Supermaxes considering how badly they have performed in the series vs the Heat? Do they really see Brown/Tatum core really leading them to a Championship? Should they consider trading one of Jaylen Brown or Jayson Tatum and look to retool around the other?

Yes, the general NBA public has known this for years. Coulda had Jimmy, coulda had AD, coulda had Kawhi, coulda had KD. Get any of those guys and they probably have a ring right now.

Trading Tatum would be insane

They struggle with ball handling and passing, Brown makes that worse, plus Brown has hinted he's interested in leaving eventually.

Trading him for a PG makes sense.

Yes. You cant pay both of these guys the Super Max. Trade Brown this summer. Get a #2 option that is either a guard that can facilitate or a point forward wing. To me the biggest issue with this BOS team is it becomes so reliant on his turn, my turn offense in close games. And if both guys arent on, they cant beat the elite teams. We saw this last year against GS and we are seeing it again this year now against Miami.

They become so easy to defend because no team is afraid of either Tatum or Brown's facilitating ability. And neither guy makes the other one better. Time to maybe take a slight step backwards in individual talent and get a guy that fits better. But as long as Tatum and Brown are the #1 and #2 option, their depth will be wasted and will be easy to defend with both guys being so score first mentality.

I mean, every team should always consider trading any player if the price is right
You could argue there's always a couple of guys in the League that there's really no price high enough, but Tatum and Brown is not them.

Despite how badly they performed tonight, I still hope they both come back. I love the (mostly) homegrown thing the Celtics have had going.

Besides, you'd have to get another star-caliber player for either one to be worth it, and I'm not sure I see that happening.

I'd get rid of Mazzulla and go after Nick Nurse though. And maybe look around to see if there's an attainable younger replacement for Horford.

Should the Bucks trade Giannis? Should the Cavs trade Garland/Mitchell? Should the Sixers trade Embiid? I mean they still made the conf. finals, its not easy but they are still young and need time. Where was Jimmy when he was 25?

Yes. Trade Tatum to the Spurs for a future draft pick or two and call it a day.

Tatum absolutely not.

Brown only if you’re able to package him for an ever better star player, otherwise no.

Definitely fire the coach though, with the plethora of good coaches available right now, Celtics have a very desired roster and city.

The question is always : for what.

Very few players are truly untradable, we just had a top 20 all time player traded this year. The question is does the return and timing make sense.

But if the Celtics are uncomfortable with locking both Tatum and Brown into super max, then they'd at least need to think about it, Brown especially since they already had leaked that previously they considered him in big trades etc.

Though for the Celtics the likely course of moves is first give Brown the max extension then trade, unless of course Brown himself agrees to extend with whoever the preferred target is.

No. They're close enough that a great coach can push them over the edge, and their best players are young enough to continue getting better.

Only one team wins the title each year. You can argue all the others should blow it up. Boston just happens to be one of the others thats closer than 95% of the other others.

They have to at least consider moving Brown. Losing him for nothing would be a disaster and giving him the super max probably ends almost as poorly.

Brown. I’m sorry, he’s just massively overrated.

No way. If the current Celtics can't do it, what are the chances that the Spurs can with a team built around Tatum or Brown?
