What do you consider underrated? Kobe is in my Top 10 list overall.

A lot of advanced statisticians on here who advocate efficiency over anything else, even though Kobe played in the most dead ball era of rinse and repeat iso half sets. Which isn’t wrong, especially nowadays, and still the correct take to win more basketball games. The others outside are probably the common casual who fell into the flashiness and mind games of the mamba. Majority of the first generation of social media users grew up with him, thinking of him as their Jordan reincarnated. His love for the game, work ethic and competitiveness cannot be questioned though.

Rest in power Bean.

he's overrated by the media for obvious reasons, because he was his generation's MJ. All the young players that came into the league after he did idolized him. Those ex-players are now all the talking heads in the media that generate all the discussions surrounding the GOAT debate. Because most NBA players are idiots who are guilty of this as well, they've completely whitewashed the fact that Kobe was a pretty crappy teammate and husband so those glaring negatives are never considered when ranking him. It helps that later in life Kobe settled down and was by all appearances an amazing father and positive influence. Let's not also forget that Kobe was the game's best player for a half-dozen years between Shaq and Lebron so he deserves a lot of the adulation though maybe not so much.

he's supposedly underrated on here I suppose because a lot of us actually watched the NBA before 1990 so we have a more expansive frame of reference when it comes to talented basketball players. And I assume you think him not necessarily being top 10 on here means he's underrated. He's anywhere between the 5th and 12th best player in all actuality and I haven't seen many posters you should take seriously that have him any lower than that. You can't excuse his chucking ways, stacked teams, favorable whistle and being a drama queen. Those things matter and are some of the things that prevent him from being universally considered top 5-7 but just because he's slightly lower overall doesn't mean he's underrated.

anything after the top 5 is up for discussion. There's been a lot of great NBA players.

People who play(ed) the sport understand how much hard work it took for him to become THAT skilled. It's admirable and embodies a level of dedication for people.

People who appreciate numbers more than anything don't really care about skills and use statistics to evaluate players.

It's two different worlds.

Lol. As passionate as you are, your opinion just doesn't weight as much as NBA players or people who are close to the sport.

As a 17 year old kid he had the balls to go:

"Jordan is your GOAT? OK cool. I'm coming to get him"

And those of us old enough to know better will always love him for it!

He had 1 mission. He never apologised for it. If he's not top 10 or 15 all time IDGAF.

What are you talking about, Kobe is overrated everywhere. One of the best players in history but shouldn't be in GOAT or even Top 10 conversations. He's backed by Lakers fans though so that's where the overrating comes from.

Is ranking of 10-12 all time considered overrated or underrated?

No, but many players have him as top 5 all time at the very worst. Some will even have him as the GOAT or top 2 at worst.
So many people who attain the heights of power in this culture—celebrities, for instance—have to make a show of false humility and modesty, as if they got as far as they did by accident and not by ego or ambition.

There is an over emphasis on winning in the media and in the general public, and an under emphasis on the same thing on this board. This board generally is more analytical and attempt to segregate team accomplishments from analyzing players. Kobe not only had the flash and charisma, but he also won a ton. The general public and media overrate him because he has 5 rings (ie. 5 > 4 better than LeBron because ringz).

If Kobe was drafted by the Hornets, averaged 30+ every season but only wins 1-2 rings, the general public and media would put him around the Dirk/KG level. Which is more or less where he is on this board.

You need to share your definitions 'underrated' and 'overrated' before we can even respond thoughtfully to this line of questioning. In what ways does RealGM underrate Kobe? In what ways do others overrate him?
