Is Monty Williams the worst contract in the league?

One of the highest paid coaches in sports, his contract is longer than any player. Can’t just trade him away for salary savings, ownership would need to pay out his entire deal just to move on from him. Just seems brutal.

Is there any contract that is worse than this?

Here’s a report on his deal at the time it was signed this past summer:
The Detroit Pistons made Monty Williams an offer he couldn’t refuse. The 51-year-old has agreed to a massive deal to become the new head coach of the Pistons on reportedly the biggest coaching contract in NBA history. Detroit is giving Williams a six-year, $78.5 million contract that could reach eight years, $100 million with incentives, per multiple reports.

At more than $13 million per year, Williams immediately becomes the highest paid coach in the NBA, and one of the highest paid coaches in American sports history. His annual salary easily eclipses Gregg Popovich’s $11.5 million deal for the NBA’s biggest coaching contract. Only a handful of NFL coaches can say they make a bigger yearly salary than Williams.

I would take him in Charlotte in a heartbeat.

Not sure why this is a thread though. Like 0% chance Detroit is even thinking about firing Monty. That contract alone will leave him there for at least the first 3 years. Rome wasn't built overnight.

It's a thread because he's grossly overpaid and they're close to setting a losing record.

Sensationalizing the current situation a bit, but then again the entire internet is as well so I can't blame you. I just don't like that we dangled a ton of money in front of a guy that didn't want the job even. He's not doing a very good job, but in the end you can't make something out of nothing. You can't make a car move without gasoline. You can yell at it, plead with it, trade it for another car, but in the end it's not going to run unless you have at least some fuel. Monty is working with a roster with no shooting, in an era where shooting is the game.

I would take him in Brooklyn before you take him in Charlotte

Vaughn is the worst HC in NBA currently bar none

This is Weaver’s mess, not Monty’s.

I mean Williams looked at that roster and said I need a six-year guaranteed deal because this mess isn't getting fixed in a season or two. The guy who should've been fired, immediately, was Weaver. Not only do you have someone from the outside telling you as the owner that your team is too much of a dumpster fire to turn around quickly, but the GM is too stupid to realize he's telling on himself when he ask the owner to sign off. It didn’t happen in year one of the rebuild. It happened last summer.

The irony is I always prefer a proven veteran coach over a young inexperienced tactician and they have been doing this without much success with SVG and Casey instead of building an organization. Instead of paying that amount, they should have chose a cheaper coach like Bud, Stotts or Vogel and use more $ to poach those very competent hardworking trainers of Miami and assistant scouts of the Lakers.

Now this is craziness, while I could understand Charlotte and Brooklyn fans , SA is in different stratosphere

Vaughn disagrees, but if you really want a winner ….

Nobody beats Steve (Trash) Nash in this department everrrrrr

Take the biggest shmuck from RealGm forums and he can challenge Nash in coaching

yep. I remember when he was signed saying he's a complete fraud and of course received pushback but I think we all see who was right. He's just another in a long line of coaches that was carried by a good roster and made people with little basketball knowledge believe he was actually responsible for his team's success. Almost none of these coaches are anything special. If you have great players you'll have success. It's that simple. It's very rare for a coach to be able to coach a team up that isn't very talented and have success, whether it's because of system, teaching, or manipulating lineups. And guess what? Monty isn't one of them.

But listen, this Pistons organization has been one of sports worst run for a really long time and this is par for the course. They haven't won a playoff game since 2008!!! This used to be one of the best franchises in the NBA. They've been to the ECF eleven times. They've made the Finals five times, winning three championships. Having them be in this state is bad for the league. They have great fans and deserve so much better.

i think the impact coaches in basketball (and subsequent blame) is vastly overstated among fans. you can set rotations and call plays but at the end of the day the players are making like 100 split-second decisions every play and then need the requisite skill/athleticism to execute them. one quote i love from SVG when he coached the pistons was when he was asked about a run the opposing team went on. his response, "yeah, put lebron back in the game. great adjustment".

i like to think of myself as a pretty good euchre player but if i'm dealt hands like 9-9-10-10-Q then i'm pretty much going to lose every time.

No, and even now, it was still a good hire. He wasn't brought in for his coaching abilities, however you rate them. He was brought in because the Pistons are arguably the worst franchise in the league in arguably the least desirable destination, and Monty is a pretty big name coach. They needed to overpay to get someone like him.

Think of it less as coaching hire and more as a celebrity endorsement.

And as others have mentioned, no coach would be doing any better.
