Here's the new MVP discussion thread!

The poll is set up so you can change your vote as the players jockey for position throughout the season.

Pretty please follow RGM posting guidelines and do your part to avoid this thread becoming a toxic mess. Keep it friendly and don't troll or insult each other. And please resist bashing one player in order to prop up another, it just baits other posters and makes for a hostile environment. This is supposed to be fun, you guys!

(In this version of the poll Kawhi Leonard has replaced Kevin Durant. Tough choice but Kawhi needed to be in there imo and KD only had one total vote last time.)

Luka wont get it unless the Mavs are top 3, but he has been great on both ends all year long and the Mavs are overachieving as a result.

I never said Brook was so great this year. He's clearly taken a step back from last year when he finished 2nd in DPOY voting and almost won!

But even still, it's interesting how some trends have continued. For example, Brook has the lowest on court DRTG (112.7) of any of the Bucks regulars, and Bucks are at their worst defensively (117.6) when Brook is on the bench (i.e. equivalent to the difference between the 9th and 19th ranked defense). This is the exact same scenario that played out last year.

Also, even though opposing shooters have done better vs. Brook this year, he's still holding them to -1.6% below their season averages and is again leading the league in defended shot attempts.

Poor defenders don't almost win DPOY. Perhaps you guys might want to review your thinking on the subject.

It’s odd.

The less Jokic seems to care about the MVP, the more I think he’s deserving of it.

I think it will come down to Jokic and SGA. What will it take for SGA to win it? how many more wins does OKC need to have over Denver for him to take the award?

Embiid is deserving, but i think he will miss too many games.

It wouldn't be awful at all because he wouldn't be the best on a per possession basis if he played more games. His stats are inflated by playing fewer games, playing mostly at home and mostly against bad teams.

New thread! Glad to see a picture of where the MVP’s race at right now without it being tainted by a bunch of old votes. Right now I’d go:

1. SGA
2. Jokic

(gap)

3. Embiid
4. Giannis
5. Luka

I briefly had Embiid #1 after his 50 point performance against Minnesota, but since then he’s only played in 3 out of 8 games and one of those was a -26 with 3 turnovers in a 36 point loss to the Knicks. The MVP race is just too competitive this year to be missing 7 games more than the competition and still be top of the heap. I strongly considered Giannis for 3rd, but figured that with Embiid still having the slight edge in VORP, I’d keep him in the #3 spot for now. If he keeps missing games though, he’s gonna keep falling.

Would you guys like the option to vote for your top 2 or 3 choices instead of just one? Or is that weird?

The award is about who provides the most total value to their team, not about who’s the best player on a per possession in the limited minutes they play. Now if Embiid provided the most total value to his team in 60 games and didn’t win the award because of a cutoff in favor of a worse player who played 66 games or something, that would be a shame. However, with Jokic, SGA, and Giannis all on pace to play 80 games while having fantastic seasons, it seems almost impossible Embiid would provide the most total value in 60 games.

If there was some way to clearly delineate first from second and third, it might be fun, but with the technology we have here, I think a one option poll is best.

The Luka loves is genuinely baffling to me. He ranks between 3rd and 9th in the box composites, is 5th in EPM, has the worst NetRtg and on/off of any of the real contenders by far, he’s missed 3 more games than SGA, Jokic, and Giannis, and his team is sliding into a tie for the play-in. How do you get MVP out of that? Are people just like adding points, rebounds, and assists?

Would it be possible (and make sense) to have it set up like regular MVP voting? Meaning, have points aligned for 1-5 and tally points for totals? Not sure if too much work but would be cool to have it in same format as actual mvp vote.

You prove he is on a bad team, what else and what do you mean between 3rd and 9th in the box composite? Don't you watch the game and consider how many injuries to Mavs. Plenty of examples in history:
KAJ won MVP without making playoffs
You can have a 51win TWolves KG take 2nd place MVP in 03, with 43 first votes over Dirk's 60 win team 0 first.
You can have a 61win Pacers Jermaine O'Neal 3rd place in MVP 04, 21.1 PER and 2.4BPM
Steph finished #3 missing playoffs; 05 KG and 23 Doncic getting votes not making playoffs...
