Is Chet Holmgren better than Evan Mobley?

Two promising American centers, rare sight in basketball nowadays. Mobley has disapointed many with his lack of progress and passive on court personality. Chet is a rookie sensation and he wants all that smoke. But again, Mobley was awesome rookie and was close to being DPOY already.

Who do you think is better and more promising?

Chet is better, but Chet would be playing worse if he had to play with Mitchell and Garland over Shai, J-Dub and Giddey. OKC has better, more unselfish guard play.

Chet and it isn't close.

Mobley came into the league and was supposed to be a Duncan'esque player and the only thing they really have in common is they're both tall.

Really disappointed in Mobleys growth. Dude looks like the same player since he entered the nba aside from a better 3 point shot.

For that reason, you gotta take Chet but that doesn't mean things cant change. No one knows how hard either guy will work to keep on improving or whether injuries can ruin everything for them.

I like both but Chet looks like the better of the two. Not sure if a change of scenery would make a difference for Mobley.

Mobley's lack of development is concerning, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.

Yes.

I loved rookie Mobley but he's failed to progress into the type of dynamic player that Chet already is, let alone what he could become.

I blame it on our terrible coaching staff.

Yeah this is a super quick yes. It's not even close. If there was no Wemby, Chet would he talked about alot higher, super special big talent.

Mobley seems more like a high level defensive specialist role player, he doesn't show much else traction in overall as a player.

I'm still big into Mobley, but Chet can do almost everything Mobley does and he adds inches of height and length + a really nice 3-point shot.

Mobley's shooting is a problem that makes him an awkward fit into lineups. It's been a challenge to play him next to a second big so far (at least another non-shooting one), where Chet is never going to be a problem in that regard. Mobley has better lateral quicks but Chet is no slouch. We're also comparing a 6'11" guy (7'4" wingspan) to a 7'1" guy (7'6" wingspan).

Defensively, Mobley is more well rounded. He's a really good rim protector who adds elite switchability and is disruptive all over the floor. Chet right now is already a better rim protector, but he doesn't get deflections or force turnovers quite like Mobley.

Mobley may have hit a small wall.... but I think it's a variety of things, maybe his rookie year was a bit of a new-unscouted Mobley in the NBA, and also now... Mitchell and Garland are perhaps collectively one or two steps below SGA and Jalen Williams in terms of passing facilitation.

Here's an interesting thing to think about - Josh Giddey is a 3rd initiator and he helps Chet out with savvy passing in many offensive actions. Who is doing that 3rd passing role in Cleveland ? Ty Jerome was probably that guy this year until injury..

In Mobley's rookie year Cleveland had Ricky Rubio to be that guy as well as a scoring threat with Markannen on the wing. We know Rubio helps guys get easier looks, and Mobley doesn't always have that passing savant to give him 2-6 easy looks a game anymore. Mitchell/Garland are decent passers but not the level of Rubio and Giddey in terms of willfully operating offense to get another player a shot.

Chet needs to prove in year two he doesnt' hit the same kind of plateau that Mobley did, but he also has better talent around him to open the court up.

Mobley hasn't developed the offense that people thought he would at the time of the draft for a young athletic center/pf. The disappointing thing is he isn't showing enough growth on offense. Chet's game was better coming into the league. I dare say it got better 1 year of sitting in OKC just working on his "rehab". And will be better in the future.

I'd lean towards Chet because of his spacing. But he would look worse in Cleveland and will look worse if he has play with another center. He doesn't create will in normal amounts of space yet (I think he will improve, he's very talented)

I think they are about the same right now, and that Chet gets a little overrated due to team success.
For example, in their last game Chet was 2-8 for 6 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, worst plus-minus of any of the starters.
But OKC beat the Pels on the road by 21 anyway, so no one cares. Had his team lost, you might have heard more about it, but since they usually win anyway you mostly just hear about his great games.

That said, him being on the level of 3rd-year Mobley in his redshirt rookie season is super impressive, and I definitely project him to be better long term.
