Is Jayson Tatum a superstar?

Post#1 » by guynumber45 » Sun May 26, 2024 4:08 am

Is Tatum a superstar? Is he in that Jokic/Luka/Giannis tier of player? Or is he a step below that tier?

Well, let's see.

Did he place high in the MVP race? Yes, he was 6th. So, check this box.

Did he make 1st team All-NBA? Yes, he did. So, check this box as well.

Has he performed well in the playoffs? In the two immensely close games that the Celtics have played in this ECF, he had 36/12/4/3 (steals) in game 1 and 36/10/8/2/1 in game 3. So, check this box as well.

He checks all 3 boxes. So, the answer is 100% yes. He is a superstar.

His stats and accolades say he is but it doesn't feel like it.

I don't think he's in a tier of those players who make opposing fans feel absolutely hopeless. Obviously we're all making up our own definitions. He's a 911 Turbo not a 918. There's a difference. He's a supercar, not a hypercar.

I don't honesty care, as long as he brings home the ring.

I think he probably suffers a bit reputation wise, cause he has played with mostly strong teams/contenders since he was drafted

Yes he’s a superstar. Will take him over someone like Embiid any day since Joel can never stay healthy while Tatum is an iron man.

He has to earn it but a title and how he wins a title will matter in that equation.

Right now i have
Jokic
Luka
Embiid
Giannis

are the only players clear of him

He’s a range 5 to 8 player that consistently performes extremely well and has a game suited for the playoffs. That means unless he runs into a tier 1 player (top 5 guy) that is clicking on all cylinders (like Steph) he has what it takes to win.

It doesn't really matter the Celtics have the best team overall, especially if Porzingis is healthy. I really don't think it's that close either. Holiday, Brown, Tatum, Porzingis, and White are the best starting five in the NBA.

JT has been a superstar for years. I don't know why the idiot haters are acting like this is something new or like it wasn't the case before. Stop drowning in haterade and get real.

He's imo at worst a top 6-8 player. Imo he's better but biased etc so ill skew a bit lower. You can decide if that's superstar.

Tatum doesn't have the overwhelming strengths of the top players but he has fewer weaknesses than most so that helps. Guys like embiid or kawhi might be strictly a bit better when they play but theyre so unreliable as to make it not worth it right. I think Jokic, Giannis and Luka are a tier ahead but imo he can slot in anywhere below that.

Modern day Kobe. Puts up stats, but overrated by casual fans.

There are less than 60 players, in NBA history, with three 1st team All-NBA selections. Tatum is one of them.
