Dallas also sending out 3 second round picks in the deal. They save like $11 million right off the bat.

Kidd lost confidence in Hardaway. This is what’s best for both sides

Well this just improved the Mavericks chances of resigning DJJ. Grimes is just an added bonus, there is a role to be had if he can bust his ass on defense and hit the corner three with some consistency.

Another bum move for the Pistons.
When they fired Troy Weaver I thought things were supposed to get better for Detriot

Happy for Quentin. Still a big fan of his. Great at chasing guys around screens, quick release, surprising on ball skills, and selfless too a fault.
In fact, if Grimes could've been more selfish, I think he'd still be a knick...after the OG trade last season we had too many possessions with the bench unit that ended in a shotclock violation or bad shot because Grimes had passed up the best shot of the possession just because it wasn't a particularly good look.

He can definitely shoot, something just broke in him last year. We don't know what it was.
He can defend. He's not prime Kawhi, but he's solid enough to start next to Luka Kyrie.
Will move off the ball well for layups.
Has shown zero one on one game so far in the NBA.
We had hopes he'd turn into a Klay mold type player, just lost his confidence and never recovered after a fantastic rookie year. Grimes better get over his fear of letting it fly. It was one of the primary reasons he got replaced with DDV in the lineup.

Great trade for Dallas. Grimes is an excellent defender. He kind of lost his confidence in his shot due to the [knee] injury, but you really couldn't ask for a better opportunity than to play off of Luka and Kyrie and then D-up. Happy for him.

I thought he started to look more like himself in those last two weeks before he got hurt for us. He was starting to be more assertive and realizing that without Brunson, Randle, Quickley, or Barrett on the court, he was our best option. But then he got hurt, and at that point, Thibs was no longer fighting for him tooth & nail.

The Pistons front office continues to be a clownshow, what else is new? You're welcome Dallas.

What happened to Grimes last season? I remember thinking pretty highly of him. Still over the cap even after this move but the Mavs now can offer DJJ the full MLE

I there is one guy in the league who reminds me of Prime Trajan Langdon, it is probably this guy Grimes. Trajan probably hoping to suit up for Pistons himself, considering their shooting lineup is ''brilliant''.

Seems like a low price for the Mavs to get off $12 mil or so of salary for next year even if they are both expirings. Pistons cap space isn’t going to get used much but this is a pretty bleh use of it

We are going to suck next year no matter what.
These moves have been expected since Monty got canned. We have to spend money and we have very little draft capital, so we are essentially buying picks for the price of taking on dead bodies.

He lost confidence and started to second guess himself before getting banged up. I still expect him to be a very successful starter in this league.

Grimes shot was broken towards the end of his tenure in NYK and he was not happy that DVO was starting over him, I guess Detroit got tired of him as well on the short rental.
THJR is a chucker but he does more offensively, Grimes is a good defender but it's a little overstated on him being great.

Also didn't like when Dante was getting his minutes and asked for a trade to get a fresh start. Guess Detroit wasn't it.

I accept your point, but I always thought Grimes was a serviceable player and you could have maybe gotten something better down the track.

I forgot Dallas offered NY Josh Green IIRC for Grimes straight up so Dallas has had interest in Grimes for some time.
Maybe Grimes being a spot up 3 & D guy works for the Luka offense so maybe that's where Nico/DAL is thinking here. If Dallas is lucky enough, he will be their version of Iman Shumpert.

Grimes was honest when answering a question and said that it's harder to find his rhythm when he's touching the ball less & playing less. That got spun into him "complaining about his role", which was silly then and is silly now.
I don't remember anything about a trade request before the trade, but there might have been something about that after the trade that I'm just forgetting /missed, so won't comment on that.
But let's not pretend like he was mopping about his role or some kind of malcontent. Quentin was a quintessential team-player in all facets of being a professional basketball player.

One of Quentin's best games last season was against Denver, he played 3 more games as a knick...and his PT was increasing during that stretch. If anything Grimes was getting back on track before getting hurt.
