2024-25 NBA General Discussion Thread (NBA news, random thoughts, etc.)

Post#1 » by bisme37 » Fri Oct 4, 2024 5:42 pm

The Offseason General Discussion thread wasn't wildly popular haha, but some of us seemed to like it, so I figured I'd carry it over to a new thread for the new season.

This is a place to post any minor NBA news that perhaps doesn't require a separate thread. Also feel free to post your random thoughts on the NBA, or your life in general, or whatevs. Just please no politics or anything that's going to stir up drama and get the thread locked. Please and thank you.

Enjoy the new season, good pals!

NBA has been promoting this new Cosm thing. Not sure I fully get it but I believe it's basically you go to an arena and watch a game in like mega-IMAX or something. Sounds kinda cool I guess.

This is not directly NBA related, kind off the opposite, but as huge Euroleague fan, I thought I will share how some newly Euroleague X NBA guys did in EL round one, with very short summary.

(kind off) straight from the NBA :

OMER YURTSEVEN : 8 pts. 3 rbs. Looks like a strong back up to a French star Mathias Lessort.

CHIMEZIE METU : 7 pts. 6 rbs. Ok, limited but athletic center for this level, not too shaby statline considering he plays for Barca.

FURKAN KORKMAZ : 10 pts. 2 stl. Couldn't watch this game, but looks like he will be fine role player for Monaco.

ARMONI BROOKS : 16 pts. Can shoot as advertised.

BOBAN MARJANOVIC : 8 pts. 4 rbs. 20/10 guy per 36, as he was in the NBA. Good old Boban getting some burn.

THEO MALEDON : 11 pts. 4 rbs. 3 asi. He was very solid, I was surprised.

TRENT FORREST : 10 pts. 2 rbs. 4 asi. Decent second tier guard.

JORDAN NWORA : 5 pts. 4 rbs. Missed a lot of shots, not a good debut to be honest.

USMAN GARUBA : 2 pts. Looks like his NBA years was nothing but stagnation.

STANLEY JOHNSON : 0 pts. 1 rb. Did not get his fair chance yet, but he can't shoot, and in Europe, thats even more dire weakness.

ALEKSEJ POKUSEVSKI : DNP (no MVPS anytime soon)

Guys who been in Europe for a while, but still remembered by NBA fans :

SHABAZZ NAPIER : 25 pts. 2 rbs. 2 asi. Very strong start for Napier, who up until now had very up and down (moreso down) EL Career,

KENDRICK NUNN : 16 pts. 3 rbs. 4 asi. He has become Euroleague star, and starting his second season strong in a win over Alba Berlin.

IGNAS BRAZDEIKIS : 17 pts. 5 rbs. Strong return to Žalgiris, after failed stint in Olympiacos where he was forgotten end of bench guy.

JABARI PARKER : 11 pts. 2 rbs. He was so fine last year as rookie, I made a thread about him. Could perform better, but overall ok.

SERGE IBAKA : 9 pts. 4 rbs. very solid start in Real Madrid jersey, but his team suffered a surprising loss to Bayern Munich.

Some other guys, NBA should probably minitor :

TAMIR BLATT : 21 pts. 2 rbs. 12 asi. David Blatt's son is a star now. He is likely too short and too limited athletically for the NBA, but he has offensive skills for a PG.

NIGEL HAYES-DAVIS : 15 pts. 2 rbs. 1 asi. This forward can play in the NBA nowadays. Stand out as usual.

TADAS SEDEKERSKIS : 14 pts. 6 rbs. Just a solid do it all glue guy type.

JASIEL RIVERO : 11 pts. 9 rbs. I like him. He is mobile, athletic, no non sense center.

ISAIA CORDINIER : 16 pts. 5 rbs. 2 asi. Olympics stand out for France, Isaia started EL season very strong. Keep an eye on him.

CARLIK JONES : 4 pts. 3 rbs. 6 asi. Underwhelming debut for South Sudanese star. He can fill most stats, but as became staple, struggles with scoring efficiency.

ROKAS JOKUBAITIS : 4 pts. 2 asi. Slow start for Knicks owned point guard, was completely overshadowed by teammate Tamir Blatt.

WNBA viewership has been catching up to NBA viewership - 1.2 million viewers per game to NBA's 1.5 million.

There's a random fact I just learned to leave in this thread.
LeBron has a 17.8% field goal percentage and a 12.5% 3-point percentage in clutch situations and 1/29 in 5 seconds or less shots since joining LAL

The 1.2M your quoting is CC games. She draws double vs a random wnba game without her

Would be interesting to see what the numbers are since CC is eliminated...

Dude, this is great, please continue, if possible.

Tamir Blatt - just googled and he's 27 already. Have no idea if he's really good, never saw him (though 7pt/4ast in 18mpg in his Euroleague career and highest scoring local league season is at 12ppg - doesn't look promising), but we all know Maccabi will bring more american players and will send that guy back to the bench.

Anyway, seems like your average NBA bench warmer can't come to Europe and dominate immediately anymore.
And maybe people here don't realise, but it's not only a shorter game, but coaches require from their stars players to coast less, so 30 mpg is very rare (even 25+ is very generous) + there is much less ISO, thus 30/10 or even 25+5 stat lines aren't common here, at least in the EL, and even 11+9 or similar statline is like a strong starter, and 15+5+5 could be a team's go2guy

GSW really took two awesome steals last year draft. TJD is very mature, switch D shades, athletic rim runner with advanced passing reads, i am on him for fantasy& Warriors solve many things in frontcourt with guy.

Really, I read WNBA averaged 650k per game, which was a bump up of 30% since last season.

NBA is like 2.5 times this number and they have 5 times the games. So about 13 times more viewers total.

Thanks man, I can continue, I could talk EL all day, but I think a lot of people find that annoying, so IDK. I didn't even realize Tamir was already 27, seems just few years ago he played FIBA junior games, time flies too quickly, in my head, he was still like 23... :)

Judging by and1s, your original comment is by far the best so far in this thread.
Also, who gives a F? I find clickbait threads from "NBACentel" twitter account or those daily goat threads/"my favorite player is so underrated" rants much more annoying.

Are the Cleveland Cavaliers a sleeper pick for the title? They weren't healthy at all last year and won 48 games

Taken from COSM website: :banghead:

"Ditch the headset and step into the future: Shared Reality gives you the immersive experience of augmented or virtual reality but on a much more immense scale. It facilitates real-time interaction, providing a communal experience with your friends and fellow fans that you can’t get with a headset. At the forefront of innovative entertainment, Cosm’s revolutionary domed and compound curved LED technology delivers an unparalleled and distinctive performance"

Why are these companies so intent on simulating what is already in front of us? :banghead: So the athletes get to live it while the fans get augmented reality?

Ill refrain from getting any more political but yeah this is highly odd stuff...

Can someone just throw me back to my sign up date in 2014 for a lil...

Read on Twitter

The company, Nilly, offers athletes upfront payments ranging from $25,000 into the hundreds of thousands, said Perkins and his co-founder, Wall Street veteran Chris Ricciardi. In return, Nilly gets the exclusive rights to use or sell the athlete's name, image and likeness for up to seven years, and the company and its investors receive between 10% and 50% of the player's NIL earnings during that time period.

ESPN obtained a copy of one Nilly contract that lays out a $50,000 payment to a high school senior in exchange for the exclusive rights to sell his name, image and likeness for seven years. In that contract, Nilly and its investors will receive a 25% cut of the player's NIL earnings for the length of the contract, or until Nilly earns a total of $125,000 (2½ times its initial investment), whichever comes first. Ricciardi said the percentage of NIL money that Nilly takes from an athlete can be as high as 50%, and a spokesperson said Nilly's share can be as low as 10%.

Ricciardi said -- and the athlete contract states -- that Nilly's deals are not loans but licensing agreements. If an athlete doesn't earn enough NIL money within the contracted time frame for Nilly to recoup its investment, he or she is not responsible to pay back any part of the upfront money. Ricciardi compared the deals to advance payments musicians receive in exchange for future royalties.

"There's no interest rate. There's no requirement to pay back," Ricciardi said. "It's purely a licensing deal. I would be surprised if those people thought that music advances were high interest loans."

Perkins wondered whether Nilly's critics were ever in a situation where they had to worry about helping their parents pay bills or put groceries on the table. He said he was confident that the company was helping athletes rather than harming them.

A player who accepts money from Nilly is required to fulfill several "minimum commitments" throughout the life of their deal. In the contract obtained by ESPN, the player was responsible for making at least one social media post across his accounts per month, autographing up to 10 items per year and making himself available for at least one public appearance per year. The contract also states the athlete must commit to "best efforts" to keep his social media accounts active.
