I’ve been saying for years the SGA trade was historically bad. It’s about to become the GOAT

With Kawhi likely missing games for a long while there is a pretty high probability OKC is adding a lottery pick this year in a mega stacked draft. They don’t miss on draft picks. Even if you stopped it there and MVP winner to be SGA, Jalen Williams and the next couple lottery picks is all they get… it’s probably the greatest trade in NBA history. Far surpassing Kobe for Vlade.
It may seem ugly now, but will get much uglier soon

If OKC gets Cooper Flagg I predict the league just throws the towel in. I’ve been saying future dynasty for 2 years and got clowned, but it’s getting close to that level of stacked, and may already be.

when I think of GOAT bad trade, Tractor Traylor for Dirk Nowitzki always comes up first in my head. SGA trade however is all timer, but at least CLippers sold some tickets from Kawhi and PG13 fools goldery.

Players acquired through trades include Russell, Kareem, Magic, and Wilt.
Also the Tatum + Brown duo. Ditto Parish + McHale.

Until OKC becomes a conference Finalist the Brooklyn trade that gave the Celtics Tatum and Brown will be superior

If the Clippers won a chip in 2020 or 2021 would you still consider it a historically bad trade?

It's one of those trades that looks as bad as it does in retrospect. It didn't look bad when it happened considering it also convinced Kawhi to join, they became a contender instantly and may have won a chip or two had injuries not wrecked them.
There are some that were instantly awful when they were made. The one that facilitated OKC getting PG13 is one that comes to mind. The Magic traded Oladipo and Sabonis to OKC for a past-his-prime Ibaka when they weren't anywhere near contention. It was inexplicable when it happened despite the fact that Oladipo hadn't broken out yet and Sabonis was only a rookie.
OKC flipped those two to Indy for PG13 next year. Since PG13 was traded for SGA and a gazillion picks, you could say that ultimately all this haul that OKC got was possible because of that insane Ibaka trade. It's obviously not that straight forward, but still.

So when are you going back to the Clippers? Probably when Kawhi leaves or retires.

At the time, the trade wasn't bad. People are looking retroactively. Kawhi had just come off an all time playoff run, looked like the best player in the league. Paul George was in his prime and looked like an all-nba level player. To get those guys, you have to give up something.
We mock teams for not taking moves. But that's the thing with taking a risk, some times it doesn't go your way. I still maintain this was a worthwhile risk for teh Clippers.

Good memory on this. Ibaka / Oladipo for that pick was pretty big. I understood it but OKC took a step back that season. Getting PG13 from IND with Oladipo and Sabonis (Sabonis later helped Indy get Haliburton!) was a game changer for sure.
That Ibaka move was just one trade that eventually affected the careers of some big name players -- PG13/Oladipo/Sabonis/Haliburton/SGA/Kawhi

Vlade for the 13th pick with the old rookie scale contract is not such an incredible trade.
There are sevwral better tham that.

Kawhi on the Raptors only worked because Toronto had a good team that can still win games without Kawhi. So really, Kawhi just needed to play in the playoffs, he can take off as much time as possible in the RS. On the Clippers and especially in the West, a month off could mean the difference between the #5 seed and being out of the playoffs completely. You need 50 wins to safely avoid the play in out West.

You could do that with every big trade... ever?

it's the 6th for for 9th and 18th pick.
moreover, it was agreed before for the bucks to take Dirk and the Mavs Trailor. Dirk was Nelson's man all along

I'm just wondering has another team in history given up the best player in the trade and at least 3 first round picks on top of the best player?

Yes, I get it is rather a draft blunder than trade blunder, but technically, they traded him, they could just draft him for themselves.

Eh they miss in the draft like everyone else. Let's not get carried away.

I’m just amazed at how they targeted SGA. Presti is unreal. His value at the time was a poor man’s Maxey and Presti knew he’d be a top 3 guy in this league
