-----------------------------------------------------

Figured I should make a thread for this since that's what I do. If someone could explain to me why I do this, please do haha. I think I might have a problem you guys.

Anyway... This is the former In-Season Tournament if you aren't aware. It's now called the Emirates NBA Cup. Last year the Lakers defeated the Pacers for the trophy.

Basically, teams will play NBA Cup games against teams in their assigned group, on Tuesdays and Fridays throughout November (until Dec 3 actually). Then it goes to a knockout round and Final. NBA Cup games are also Regular Season games that count in the RS standings (except the championship game).

Enjoy the tourney and go your team!

Eight teams (four per conference) will advance from Group Play into the second and final stage of the Emirates NBA Cup 2024, the Knockout Rounds: the six group winners and two “wild cards.” The wild cards will be the team from each conference with the best record in Group Play games that finished second in its group.

The Knockout Rounds will consist of single-elimination games in the Emirates NBA Cup Quarterfinals (Tuesday, Dec. 10 and Wednesday, Dec. 11), Semifinals (Saturday, Dec. 14) and Championship (Tuesday, Dec. 17). The national broadcast schedule for the Knockout Rounds will be announced at a later date.

Group Play Tiebreakers:
1. Head-to-head record in Group Play
2. Point differential in Group Play
3. Total points scored in Group Play
4. Regular-season record from the 2023-24 season

I love the idea of a mid season thing, I HATE the execution of this.

There are just so many better ways of doing this.

Is the championship game still hilariously ignored by team records?

The two teams in the championship game are the only teams that play an 83rd game on the season. (The rest is just part of the regular schedule.)

So I get being annoyed that you don't get a win in the standings for winning that game, but at the same time, it's an extra game and not part of the RS.

I think in a few years the cup will expand to more games so that there is a balanced secluded of 58 to 62 games. The Cup games will generate enough $$ to off set shortening the season and it should mmake the regular season games more important.

At least the courts don't look as bad this year. Still terrible, but not a literal assault on the eyeballs.

Im looking forward to the cup. A treble for the best overall record, cup and LOB in the same calendar year wouldnt be bad at all.

Btw i dont get why there is a trophy for nest record and not presented. If the nba wants the regular season to matter more than they could market these things a little better

The fact that Silver has to do this to get players to care about doing their jobs is pathetic. The league cannot be taken seriously.

There are cash prizes for reaching the knockout round in the tournament, and the prizes will keep growing as a team advances. Each player gets $500,000 for winning the title, $200,000 for making the final, $100,000 for reaching the semifinals and $50,000 for making the quarterfinals. There is one caveat: two-way players on those rosters only get half as much as those on standard contracts.

Didn't even notice Celtics and Cavs in the same group until now. Pretty juicy.

I’m excited for it - the format was a successful way to spice up November basketball imo. I hope to god these courts look better on TV tho. Somebody should’ve went to jail for those designs last year.

Hopefully one of the contenders wins this cup AND the championship.

Just to become the first to do it.

They need to change the scheduling of this next year and make it a march madness type event. Basically, stack games on during the day and run it Thurs - Sun or even all during the week if they don't want to compete against football. Would be 2x as big

I want the Lakers to win the cup again. A repeat will add to the GOAT legacy of Lebron.
You want it to be one way....but it's the other way. (Marlo)

Larry Bird won an International McDonald's Cup which is far more prestigious and relevant than the Emirates NBA Cup.

Oh yeah? LeBron is a 3x Mr. Basketball in Ohio. Why doesn’t Jordan have one of those?!

Learn to take a joke my guy.
