How does your team winning or losing games impact your mood?

Post#1 » by bisme37 » Wed Jan 29, 2025 6:41 pm

Just wondering how the rollercoaster of the NBA season impacts fans' moods and emotions etc.

Since my C's won a title last season I think I'm handling losses a bit better. I guess I figured out RS games come and go, there's a million of them and no one even remembers them 2 weeks later, and the main thing is just to be healthy and feeling good about yourself with the playoffs start.

That said, it's not like losses improve my mood lol. If my mood was a 7 before the loss, now it's suddenly a 5 or whatever, even if I'm trying to not be mad haha. Just takes the wind out of my sails. And my particular team has been trading wins and losses every other night for weeks now, so every other day I've been kinda downcast and grumpier than I'd like.

Anyway... I have no idea if this is remotely interesting to anyone but that's the thread. Feel free to discuss!

Lifelong Cleveland sports fan.

I've experienced more losing in my lifetime between our 3 teams than most will experience with 1. I don't care about the Cavs losing other than like the 2 minutes immediately after the game.

I watch basically every other team and I care more about players than teams. I don't really gamble much so I'm not emotionally tied to wins and losses

I oscillate between anger, despair, ennui, and downright nihilism.

The NBA makes it near impossible to consume their product locally (within a 4 or 5 hour radius of the arena).

Nationally, isn't much better but will get more ABC games after the Super Bowl.

I honestly like talking about basketball and reading stats more than i enjoy watching it now days. The exception is if my team is in the playoffs, then i wanna watch every second of every one of their games.

I watch a lot of NFL because it's free and easy with a digital antenna.

I can't in all honestly say that I want to see my team the Nets lose. But supposedly it is for the greater good so that makes it a little easier. Will see. To me losing is like a brutal winter, where I just want to see it end and spring to emerge. But no matter what happens I always enjoy the playoffs.

So I voted "Other".

I dont believe in the "playoff mode on" nonsense. You establish habits in the regular season and then you intensify your effort, but if oyu cant play defense for 82 games it wont magically appear. So to me it depends on how my team loses. If its a worthy effort but the other guys hit that one in a thousand game where every three and every heave falls, and we lose, its okay. But if its a far inferior team and we lose due to alck of effort or stupid/selfish play and a coach that does not intervene i feel like it costs me 2-3 days life time every time

Five Stages of Grief when any team loses:

Image

Denial: We had 0 chance vs. (insert team here) tonight. Can't be helped.
Anger: F*** this team. F*** the GM. F*** everything that touches Earth.
Bargaining: Maybe if we tank the rest of the season, we can sell off our good players for draft picks (Not me, but I hear some fans do this  )
Depression: We'll never be good. We'll never win a title. We suck for another decade.
Acceptance: Next year will be different. Regroup and get back in the race.

Raptors fans:

Winning - Pissed the tank is getting weaker
Losing - Crapping on our players

It's perpetual sadness and anger.

I used to be furious as a Heat fan back in the day. We had some annoying ones, god damned Kobe buzzerbeater bankshot was just terrible as the Kobe/Wade arguments were daily wars.

It doesn't impact my mood I go to the gym regularly and it helps take my mind off the **** that is the Charlotte Hornets.

Seriously in my 20's I was still young and didn't recognize the sport for what it is. This is just entertainment at the end of the day I don't take sports seriously anymore.

I voted for: Losses don't improve my mood but I shake them off pretty well

It's been a tough year to watch the Raptors. I haven't been this disconnected since the Tampa Year and post trade deadline last season once everybody got injured/sat for tanking purposes. I know that the best course of action is to hope for a high draft pick this year, but watching my team lose isn't fun. Especially when we've barely been at full strength and IQ only appearing in 9 games after getting that massive deal last offseason (one I didnt like).

Currently, I just watch fun matchups when I can and catch the Raptors highlights on replay.

The combination of aging, apathy from years of poor results (by ALL of my favorite teams), and being a more even keeled person to begin with means I genuinely just don't get bothered anymore - but wins still feel good

I actually prefer watching a tanking team during the regular season. The games don't matter, there is no pressure, no expectations...

The Wizards are so fun this year for example. Not that I ever cared whether they won or lost but I can just focus on a specific player without having to pay attention to the game at large

Depends on if I know we're trying to tank or not.

Despite being a life-long fan, I admittedly have limited my viewing of all NBA games because the current state of the game is uninteresting to me.

That said; I follow my favorite teams, occasionally tuning in, and I only get "upset" when I see a lack of effort or enthusiasm on the floor. I want to see guys that will fight to win.

The 2005-2007 Timberwolves era really changed my perspective as a fan. During the whole KG era, I was sort of aware we weren't that good and that our front office wasn't putting an amazing team out there, but the end of the KG era and everything that came after (it would be another 5 years before we won at least 30 games), I realized it was more fun to follow the whole league rather than just be stuck watching whatever horrible product Kevin McHale or David Khan put out there.

There was a funky fun Rick Adelman moment where the Wolves were fun to watch, and then there was last year's playoff run. Besides that... Minnesota typically isn't just bad in terms of talent. We've played some awful-to-watch basketball. You can't expect me to myopically follow the Ricky Davis show, Al Jefferson/Johnny Flynn/Corew Brewer, Andrew Wiggins with offensive freedom, or even Ant playing without spacing while Julius Randle does stuff. I not only expect to lose, I expect to deserve to lose, haha.

So I always pick a few teams to focus on, to soften the blow and protect my heart. I've been following OKC since 2020, Denver since 2009, Cavs since 2022. Flirting with New York, Memphis and Indiana.

I'll always follow the Wolves but base zero percent of my happiness on their success. When they win... it's almost such a novelty I don't know what to do anyways.

As a Nets fan, I have virtually no interest in the season at all

My involvement on game day is confined to seeing who we’re sitting & then checking the score afterwards.

Watch the odd game of other teams but the season is a complete write off for us now so rarely bother with our games
