What's the consensus on Bennedict Mathurin?

Post#1 » by shi-woo » Sat Apr 5, 2025 4:13 am

Bennedict Mathurin burst onto the scene as a rookie, was a high pick, and has been a professional scorer. He has solid skills, an NBA body, and I personally thought he was destined for more when he averaged 6 fta per game as a rookie.

Those numbers used to be used as a tell if a guy was on track to score 25 a game, and 10 fta the bar for most AS level wings. Since then he hasn't found a consistent role for the Pacers, and i've heard Bill Simmons say multiple times this year they are going to have to choose Hali or Mathurin, which just seems odd to me.

So far he's averaging 16/5/2 on average shooting, is still getting to the line, and still playing poor defense. That is essentially what he's been doing since college, it's kind of shocking really, 16/5/2 since he was 18 almost every night for a guy that was in the ROTY and 6MotY conversation.

What's his ceiling, and does he still have a place on the Pacers, or has he been surpassed by Nembhard?

I really don't know what to think about this guy right now

He's mathurin every year. Hopefully enough Mathurin to take the next step.

Very inconsistent player who can score 25 points one night and disappear the next game.

His defense is bad and Carlisle is not happy about it.

But this kid has great potential. He is only 22.

Bennedict Mathurin. His name is literally in the title of theard. 1/3 of it too, and you clicked on it deliberately. Strange you still missed it.

Looks like the refs and or players figured out his foul drawing from year 1. His draw rate is down which hurts him as a scorer. I'm hoping for more free throws from developing rookies on my home team, like JaKobe.

Who is the better young Canadian SG, Bennedict Mathurin or Shaedon Sharpe?

Thats a good question. They both probably more potential than substance. I personally like Sharpe better, its his third year right? I still have hopes, but he is the player who can have game like the other night where he had 30+ on good shooting, and will follow it with yesterdays game where he had 5 more shot attempts than points...

They were in the same draft but Sharpe is a year younger. I think that Sharpe is the better athlete and has more potential. I would have to go with him.

Improving every year and not yet 23. Great size and skill set.
He could easily become a fringe all star in his prime. Solid starter as a floor.
He needs to focus effort on D to take that next step though.

Similar strengths and weaknesses as Cam Thomas, a better rebounder but worse playmaker.

His floor isn't solid starter. His floor is inefficient shot creation similar to Jordan Clarkson in Utah.

He’s someone who doesn’t deserve his own thread on General Board.

He’s a young player who has continued to improve through his first few seasons. He’s much better defensively than he was as a rookie, though, still not where he needs to be. While he is a bit inconsistent, it’s not as bad as it seems to be. The pacers have a very balanced team where every game different players step up. We have a couple guys we rely on more than others, but it’s very much a “feed the hot hand” team.

I agree completely.

How dare someone start a thread that isn’t about LeBron, Embiid, Giannis, SGA, Jokic, or Curry!

Everyone knows the only topics that should be allowed on the GB are about superstars or Lakers, Raptors, Knicks.

The audacity of someone starting a thread about someone else…The. AUDACITY.

His floor isn't solid starter. His floor is inefficient shot creation similar to Jordan Clarkson in Utah.

His shooting efficiency is significantly better than Clarkson and he isn’t yet 23. He has much better size as well. He would have to regress badly for that to be his floor.

I wonder if the Pacers would consider trading him in the offseason, because with his solid raw stats he would probably demand more money than his impact on winning warrants. Would a team like Utah spend one of their less valuable firsts to take a flier on him taking a leap, or is that something that Indy would accept?

Na, don’t think so. Indiana values Mathurin a lot more than a late 1st.

Mathurin has shown enough that the Pacers aren’t going to sell low on him. Especially as he seems close to having a breakthrough.
