Definitely is an interesting situation and makes it very difficult to gauge how good Tatum is. Most fans are envious of this and wish their star players had such a great supporting cast.

This playoffs specifically every star player is having issues. The overall picture for Tatum though is this is obviously true.

Yeah, Tatum has the "curse" of being a Pippen on a team that was collectively good enough to win without having a Jordan. He's still a great player, even if he's not the Jordan that the media demands each team must have.

How come Spida never cops as much heat and flame as Tatum despite playing on a similar stacked team and never making it even past the 2nd round of the playoffs ?

Also Tatum has worked really hard to become a legit 2 way player and defensive beast.

His series against Orlando was simply outstanding.

I dunno that Spida ever played on a similarly stacked team in Utah despite having a lot of respect for Rudy, and the only time the Cavs haven't been killed by injuries in the playoffs, we rooked his supporting cast while he just ran into an even bigger playoff killer...and you can't really blame anyone for getting Brunson'd :dontknow:

You're asking why someone widely considered a top-5 player gets more heat than someone who is nowhere near that?

Do you people ever get sick of this? It’s nauseating.

I watched a star have 8 points in the close out game and no one batted an eye.

Spida is supposed to be a top 10 player in the league (which i think he isn't)

Definitely have Jalen Damn-Son and Cade ahead of him now :D

I also don't get the blowback here. Is anyone suggesting the Celtics aren't absolutely stacked? Their 3rd and 5th(?) best players each scored 40 in the same game this season. That's just crazy

I’ve said this over and over again. The Celtics are “stacked” until each player is talked about individually. Have a look at the stuff said about Tatum, go look at what is said about Brown. See what people said about KP and what Bucks fans were saying about Jrue.

Everyone loves White but the buffalo wasn’t the buffalo until he got to the Celtics.

People love to talk about Tatums stacked teammates. Terry Rozier and Grant Williams? What are them dudes doing now, still in their primes. Gordon Hayward with a snapped leg and Kyrie requiring surgery and being a malcontent.

the 2021 jazz actually had a slightly better SRS (8.96) than this year's cavs team (8.81). and they lost to a +6.0 clippers team without kawhi for the last 2 games. and now this year's cavs team is in danger of losing as a +7.1 SRS favorite, which I believe would be the 4th worst upset ever. both team's were probably a bit of paper tigers and maybe it's to mitchell's credit that their SRS was so high in the first place, but he wasn't really a standout in anyway on this year's cavs team or really a standout compared to rudy either.

and in between he lost as a +2.3 favorite to new york and +2.5 favorite to dallas, which also had luka injured for 2 games i think. also basically even (+0.2 and +0.1) in the 2020 and 2019 losses, though the 2019 rockets were better by the time the playoffs started. 3 losses as a +2 favorite (2 against injured opponents) and 1 as a +7 favorite would be pretty ignominious if cleveland can't turn this one around (though i still think they could).

Maybe SRS isn't god? Who was on that Utah team, I don't remember thinking they were nearly as stacked as these cavs but maybe I'm misremembering. And I can't blame him for getting Brunson'd either time. Some times you just run into an even bigger killer, regardless of how bad you are.

When players talk about the whole not wanting to be the face of the league stuff this is what they mean. This isn’t analysis. This isn’t criticism. This is just being straight up mean and disrespectful. If you don’t think Tatum is “that good” it’s fine, it’s valid. But **** like this is just being an **** to him for no reason.

the thing that makes the celtics so stacked is that their 3rd-6th guys are unbelievable, especially in terms of impact. i remember white getting lots of talk for his impact metrics before joining the celtics. his first 4 years in the league, he was +11, +6, +3, and +9 in on/off. and jrue was even better. in the 10 years before he joined boston, he was +10 on/off in the regular season and +12 in the playoffs. and horford has been a career long impact guy who is basically perfect for this era with his post defense, switchability, and 3 point shooting to spread the court. and then porzingis is like that on steroids with 7'3" rim protection and 3 point shooting out to 28 feet. it's not that any of them are necessarily first option superstars, but they aren't just guys standing around waiting for wide open 3's, they can actually hit contested stuff or pump fake and drive and make plays which not a lot of role players can, and they all give elite defensive value. no one else really has that 3 thru 6. the jays aren't bad, but their stats have simply never supported their claims to greatness and their on/offs the last few years have not indicated that they are impactful beyond their stats. but they are still good enough that when you have the celtics 3 thru 6, plus pritchard as 6MOY, that brown and tatum still make the celtics overall fairly ridiculous.

of course, steph curry has had 2 teams basically make the conference finals while he was out with injuries and no one held it against him.

That’s weird.

I swear Jokic, SGA, Ant have all had horrible nights these very playoffs and their teams have won.

Check the on/off numbers as well.
