Do you think Boston regrets the Jaylen Brown contract?

Post#1 » by Hook_Em » Tue Jun 10, 2025 6:48 pm

He was in the final year of his deal last season when they won the title. This season was the first year of his new deal and has 4 years/$236m remaining going forward.

There was no point in my life that I thought Jaylen should be the highest paid player in the NBA.

Imo, that kind of contract should be given out to maybe 8 players in the league. If you're not a top 10 player in the NBA (regular season and playoffs), you shouldn't be making the max. It just kills a team's cap sheet.

Look at what's happening to Denver right now and I scratched my head with Masai tossing big contracts like they were candy.

With the benefit of hindsight yes but decisions aren’t made with the benefit of hindsight.

No, I don't think that they do. He was main piece of their championship run, and contracts go up and up, the fact he had highest contract ever by the time he signed it, is barely relevant in 3 years as every year we get new highest contract ever. in 2017, Curry getting 40 Mil a year was biggest contract ever, in 3 years that was underpay. If they wanted to move Brown, there would be plenty of takers.

They've made 2 Finals appearances, with one title, and 4 other ECF appearances since he's been a Celtic.

I don't think they're SUPER concerned about it right at the moment.

He won finals MVP and brought another championship to Boston after 16 years. I think he deserves the money regardless what happens now.

The contract paid for itself when we hung the banner.

He stepped up huge on the defensive end after the contract. He always had skills there but as his offensive load increased he got a little lackadaisical on the other end. He really refocused on that end last year. Adding Jrue/KP was part of that, but contract security probably as well. It's easier to really give it all up for the team when your individual bag is secure. If he was in contract limbo, not sure that happens the same like it needed to for them to win. Might have been moot too because they could have traded him if he wouldn't extend for less than the supermax.

I think it'd be more appropriate if he was a max guy vs. supermax but what can you do. I guess they might regret not negotiating that harder, but considering how it all worked out I doubt they're fretting over it.

Absolutely not. As another poster mentioned, the cap keeps going up every year. Brown was the finals MVP, and he has been very healthy. Worth every penny, he's the type of player every team covets.

Maybe this is semantics but he isnt the highest paid player in any single season. Even if he's slightly over paid so are the majority of the top 10 or 20 highest paid guys this year. So relatively i dont think he's overpaid in the proper context

It's my belief that the new CBA is a direct response to Jaylen Brown's contract. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. Whatever value he adds to the team is not near worth a supermax deal regardless of coping mechanisms. His scoring and efficiency have been dwindling in linear fashion since he got paid.

They should. Teams have to stop bidding against themselves. Stop paying a third team nba guy first team nba money. Just pay just more than what he could get as a free agent. If he doesn't like that then trade him.

They'll only regret giving him that deal if Jaylen gets a catastrophic injury or loses all of his basketball acumen. Winning a title solidified his legacy and he is still relatively young and can improve (incrementally). Boston is a big market and contender, they are a marquee franchise and need the big names to stay relevant.

No.
This topic was recently a discussion.
The contract is tradeable. Several teams will line up to acquire him if the price is right.

OP, I suggest you watch the Celtics championship run over. Game by game, because JB deserved his FMVP. Heck of a talent heck of a motor.

I think the contract situation with a few players on the Celtics are dumb by themselves but really I think they knew that and have come to terms that they had a number of irreplaceable players and a small championship window and made the deals to lock in the team they had. They won a title so it worked out, the contract situation is what it is there's not much to regret they won the high risk high reward bet.

He helped BOS win it all.

If BOS had failed to win one they might regret it. It was an expensive investment that paid off.

I'm going to go with hell naw. As integral as JT is to the Celtics culture, JB was just as important as his running mate. He did everything asked of him from the team and was coming off a career year with a his second All star bid and first time as an All-NBA 2nd teamer. I think the Celtics taking care of everything on the back end allowed him to focus on that championship run which ultimately lead to duo MVP honors in the playoffs. He's a core building block no matter how overpaid he is in comparison to his contemporaries and his secondary scoring + defense was crucial.

No, because at least 10 teams in NBA would trade for Jaylen Brown today.

Imo outside of Boston he could be a bad contract, but in Boston with Tatum he works as a good contract.
