Is Memphis Retooling or Rebuilding?

Post#1 » by bpcox05 » Mon Jun 16, 2025 4:32 pm

With Bane being shipped for a heavy pick package, do you think Memphis is planning on retooling or rebuilding?

Just to help make it more clear, this is how we can define “retooling” and “rebuilding” for the sake of this poll…

Retooling = changing/shaking up the roster but still trying to win & compete now (e.g., maybe they’re looking to flip those picks for a different win now player)

Rebuilding = looking to sell off their star vets and collect assets/picks in order to reset and build towards the future.

Retooling according to reports.

.
By trading Bane, long part of the core in Memphis with Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr., Kleiman is acting on those words. But more star trades are not expected. Sources told ESPN that the Grizzlies are not looking to deal either of their two remaining franchise cornerstones.

The team has spent the past several months clearing salary cap space to complete a renegotiation and extension of Jackson’s contract this offseason, preventing him from hitting free agency in 2026. The belief is that an extension will get done, sources said. But the Bane trade gives Memphis an avenue to give Jackson even more on that deal and lock him in long term.

.
The Desmond Bane deal has naturally sparked a much louder round of questioning about what the Grizzlies’ next moves might be, but I don’t get the sense that rival teams are expecting them to proceed to more of a teardown. At least that’s not my early impression after several Father’s Day phone calls.

Rival teams, if anything, seemed to be more intent in the aftermath of the trade in trying to figure out what Grizzlies general manager Zach Kleiman might try to turn all of these new picks at his disposal into … and whether such flipping might happen sooner rather later.

Retooling with a thin line to rebuilding. I think they'll proceed with Morant and JJJ but also keep their options open and not be married to them.

Until/unless there's another trade, I'm assuming re-tool.

If the thinking is: the Ja/Bane/JJJ trio is not getting us a championship, then I see some logic to the strategy of shipping one of the trio out for assets they could use.

If there's a second trade where they get rip of Trip, then signs point a rebuild. If we start hearing about them getting into the Giannis, or Durant discussions...

Retool. FA don't go to Memphis, so draft picks are necessary. I see them finishing anywhere between 3-8 in the West next year, I'd reckon (and that's if Wells and Edey take a jump, which they most certainly could).

This will depend on their follow up moves...
- If they trade for other good/great players using their picks then they're retooling.
- If they trade one or both of Ja/JJJ then they're rebuilding.
- If they stay as is then theyre absolutely lost.

I think they also needed to cut salary so that they could offer JJJ a huge extension like Lauri got.

I'd try to move Ja for a team desperate for a PG asap, not because of his immaturity but because I think he's going to be injury-riddled for a lot of his career. Right now he should still have decent trade value.

Trying to put off the inevitable admission that they’re built on a faulty foundation.

Roster shuffle after hiring a new coach and seeing in the playoffs that you need a few perimeter defenders who can harass ball handlers and stop penetration.
We have plenty of offense even without Bane, now they will go throw some assets to get a longer, more defensive oriented 2 guard/wing.
We also burnt this years first with the smart fiasco so pretty much got that back, which will give us another rookie deal roster slot guy.

You don't rebuild when your two best players are in their prime.

Saw a random rumor of going after Trae young to PAIR with Ja Morant, i will LMAO if that happens, would have to be one of the worst backcourts in history at that point!

They're likely looking to retool, and Ja is likely harder to move due to history, JJJ is the guy they want and Bane was the odd man out who could net value.

They are a good team going through a coaching change. Reshaping their roster.

Theyre simply retooling. Very likely.

Why in the world would they rebuild?? They have a talented young team, multiple playoff seasons in recent yrs.

They're going to rebuild and hand the reigns over to Zach Edey as tank commander.

The one thing we do know is that Kleiman is not trying to win a championship.
