This was the same situation from Kevin Durant in 2019. Terrible. :(

Non contact calf ripples are always an Achilles rupture/tear.

Hopefully he makes a full recovery, we'll see him again October 2026.

With Tatum they took him straight to surgery and I read later that doing that makes a big difference with Achilles injuries. So I was kinda expecting the same thing here, where they report the injury and say he's already gotten surgery. JT was in NYC when it happened and went straight to Dr. O'Malley. I suppose Hali being in OKC changes things a bit.

Anyway, I've said it like 5 times already, but really sorry Pacers fans. They've come a long way with the treatments and injections that encourage healing with this injury (stem cells, growth cells etc), and I know Hali is going to come back strong. It's really not the death knell for athletes that it used to be.

This just confirms what we all knew after witnessing him go down. Such a bummer as they were doing great with him on the floor. Now there's the likelihood he'll be out all next season and he may never be the same.

What a bummer. Pacers probably would have won the title if he didn't get hurt.

No Lillard, Tatum or Haliburton next year. Embiid and Paul George are toast. East is going to be as bad as ever.

The good news it is his right one and not his left. KD and Nique both came back from that and were still elite players. Tearing your left is how you end up like Kobe post 2013 or Elton Brand post 2007.

Kinda figured, but I didn't want it to be true. Thankfully Hali's game isn't predicated around insane athleticism, and he's young. I believe that he can come back in 26-27 and be just as effective as we're used to.

Most recent:

Durant - 2019 (was able to return to form)

Klay - 2020 (never returned to form, but still productive)

Cousins - 2018 (never returned to form)

Wilkins - 1992 (was able to return to form)

Kobe - 2013 (never returned to form)

Brand - 2007 (never returned to form, but still productive)

Billups - 2012 (never returned to form)

Now Haliburton is the youngest out of the above list, so he probably has better odds. Guys like Kobe and Billups were already 35+.

He was injured earlier in the series. Was that his achilles as well?

Yeah there have been advancements.

I remember back in the early 2000s, an ACL tear was a death sentence for most athletes, but by the late 2000s science had advanced and most players have been able to return from a torn ACL without any drop off.

It almost feels like Shams is late because everyone already knew exactly what happened immediately after seeing the replay during the game. Speedy recovery to Hali. I hope he gets another shot to prove the doubters wrong. Considering his ups and downs in performance combined with his stellar play down the stretch of games, this was one of the most unique playoff runs I've ever seen.

Harden never tore an Achilles, he had hamstring issues

Dominant leg injuries are hard to recover from.

He meant tearing achilles while playing and really bad calf. Tatum I believe was healthy when he tore his.

Truly tragic thing to happen to a young player on the cusp of something special. I hope he can recover to as close to 100% as possible, it's going to be a long road and a lot of hard work along the way.

That replay was horrific to watch. I've had Achilles tendonitis and calf problems associated with it for the last six months which is bad enough, so I can't imagine how painful a full tear must be.

1 team, 3 achilles is the same season. Strange.

This is probably the saddest and most devastating injury I’ve ever seen in the NBA. It ruined the best Cinderella story we’ve ever seen in the league, and it’s unlikely the scrappy Pacers will ever be able to replicate that legendary run.

I truly hope Haliburton can recover from this. It was amazing watching him emerge as a superstar in front of our eyes.
