Genius move from Houston, the FVV contract was viewed as an overpay, this FO has navigated post James Harden in a slam dunk manner, give them their flowers

Rafael Stone. That man is cooking. FVV gets his money and if he has a bounce back season statistically, he can opt out again for more. I personally don't think he had a bad year when looking at his total impact, but his shooting numbers were down. It would be nice if Sheppard could actually prove to be a capable backup this year, so FVV doesn't have to play so many minutes. We'll see if he can.

It will be interesting to see if, rather than staying in Houston, FVV will test free agency and 'bet on himself' again going with the highest $ offer.

Yeah I mean the whole thing was Houston had a bunch of cap space a couple years ago because they were rebuilding so they signed Fred and Brooks to those big overpays to get some veterans in the room. Everybody knew he was overpaid and wouldn't be a max contract after that deal, including him.

Detroit did the same thing with Tobias Harris and that worked out as well. Sometimes this is the first necessary step of digging yourself out of a big hole.

This has been the best 2 or 3 year stretch of GMing I've seen from the Rockets

The Rockets just need a good backup SG and their team could be flawless.

Nah, just a simple 3 and D low maintenence guy. This is assuming Reed is actually going to contribute next year as their backup PG.

$25M/season for VanVleet is a steal for Houston and a sign of where NBA contracts are going, imo.

That's very cheap for FVV. Nice work by the Rockets.

I think it is fair market value - he was grossly overpaid previously. But yeah, this CBA is going to force the smart teams to stop giving out massive contracts to non-stars / role players.

NAW seems like the perfect fit but some team will end up overpaying for him.

when i listened to his comments after the GSW series, it seemed there was strong alignment btwn FVV and the HOU FO on his role and future. this is a solid outcome for both parties, although I was expecting the contract to be longer than just 1+1.
i assume the FO is thinking Reed would take over as starting PG after this FVV contract? will he be ready that soon after essentially redshirting last year?
