I can remember when he first came to Toronto. He was being touted as a 3/D player with loads of upside. Oh how wrong I was about him.

Gary Trent Jr. Is limited with what he can do but I view him as an asset.

He is 26 years old. I expect him to continue to develop his game and I would like to see him continue to be a 40% shooter from three.

He is just a guy.

He just lucked out and there was not any more money left in marked. He deserve more than the minimum.

He played really well last season, he even have big games in the playoffs. He's definitely worth more than the minimum right now. I remember watching him in the bubble and he was an absolute dog on defense, I have no idea how his defense fell off after he was traded to Raptors

He's the prime example of getting steals and deflections do not equate to playing good defense. He's a small SG whose only value is his 3pt shot which is a lot more streakier that his career 39.1% conversion would indicate. When his shot isn't falling, he's just doesn't do anything else to help your team win. Doesn't rebound, can't play make, limited ballhandling to create space, provides limited pressure at the rim and also doesn't get to the FT line.

The biggest travesty was us trading NormGod for him.

Weed. Dude looked stoned all the time while playing in Toronto. He reportedly turned down $15m/yr from us and got the vet min. Looks like he cleaned up in Milwaukee trying to get a new contract. He has regressed since coming in the trade to Toronto. (lack of) Work ethic, ambition, bad habits are his downfall. I'm not sure if he's worth salvaging. How sure can you be that he's now matured?

I think him turning down that money from Toronto with haunt him for the rest of his career. At this rate it'll take him several years to make what that contract would've given him in year 1. He needs to fire his agent for fumbling the bag so badly

I think the person who advised him was his father, former NBA player Gary Trent.

The market for shooters was red hot in 21 summer, it cooled off after that, Duncan Robinson, THJ, Norman Powell also got paid that summer.

He's not then a minimum guy, but sometimes this happens if you wait too long for something better than the initial offer(s) you recieved and everyone runs out of money

Makes sense as there is exactly zero correlation between being a former player and being a good agent

Yeah, and the writing was on the wall even when we traded for him. It was one of the worst trades in franchise history. He wasn't even a top prospect, he was picked 37th overall. The only silver lining is his game is his three point shooting, which is completely undermined by his inability to go to the line or do anything meaningful with the ball in his hands.

I don't think he is really passionate about basketball.
That's just my uneducated opinion based on his demeanor.

It's like a guy going to work and just doing the bare minimum with the occasional increase in productivity based on incentives.

New rules screwed over the middle class players

The free agency market can be tough when teams are building their roster through trades and the draft. If you miss your window, you can end up having to take a bad deal. Trent was the Bucks second best player BY FAR in the playoffs last year. He’s not a minimum guy.

Gary is a good player, can create his own shot, decent 3 point shooter, good perimeter defender, but he's limited by his average handles, inability to get to the basket, and his poor vision and rebounding capability. Also, a very streaky player, he can give you 30 one night and 5 points the next.

He will eventually find his place, I think he would fit well on a team like the Lakers or Denver.

He should be paid like a decent 6th man, that's his ideal role - ideally something like 4 years, 60m. A team would be very fortunate to get him on the minimum again.

One of the worst trades in franchise history is trading a bench player in Powell, for a younger guy with potential who just didn't work out.

A 22 year old guy and he was given a reasonable short-term contact, lol. Also it's not like Gary sucked for us, he was an 18 point player on decent efficiency that was a key part of our 2023 and 2024 runs.
