It always struck me as a little off when teams make an objectively bad basketball decision for the sole benefit of ownership. Idk how many of you are familiar with the game Catan, but it feels like the equivalent of trading wheat or brick to someone for actual cash. Heads would roll if my friends tried pulling that off at our semi annual Catan night Likewise in the NBA, I just can't shake the feeling it hurts the integrity of the game (or at least the franchise) and that only basketball assets should be available for trade.

Am I alone in that regard? It's an incredibly marginal trade but it's the principle of the matter

The Bulls need to start acting like a big market team. Hopefully Reinsdorf is the next one to sell.

It's allowed, I'm pretty sure LA or Chicago did this exact same deal in some fashion a couple years ago. A lot of teams see no need from the 2nd round and enjoy the cashflow right in, rather than paying a player. They can sign one for cheaper on the FA market for reasonable return.

That being said, I don't like the feeling of conducting trades for picks with only cash, i'd prefer assets had to be included in some fashion. I think that's the weird part. In terms of Catan, I have actually not tried to pay my friends with real money for wheat or stone. I'm going to try that next time and see what chaos unfolds, thanks GM.

Trading 2nd round picks for cash has always happened in NBA history.

If you dont have a player you like, then why not sell it?

Most SRPs turn into trash anyways.

Later 2nd round picks have fallen off a cliff in value (in my opinion) due to NIL money. Older, proven guys that used to be good value pickups in the backend of the 2nd round are going to start staying until their eligibility runs out of there is any doubt they may not end up with a guaranteed contact.

Same goes for younger guys without a 1st round guarantee. If you’re good enough to be in the mix to be drafted, chances are you’ll make more in college than on a 2-way contract or overseas while potentially helping your draft stock in the following year.

Pretty much every Bulls fan here is furious, and also completely unsurprised. Reinsdorf bought himself a new car or two, and the team he owns just got a smidge of a percentage worse. That's all there is to say.

The job of a GM is to improve the team around the margins. Most of the time, star free agents aren’t wanting to come to your franchise, and you don’t have the 1st pick in the draft.

Look at all the moves OKC made.

At least get a future 2nd round pick swap back in the deal.

Every pick is a possibility to make your team better even if it is a small one. This just screams cheap.

These owners are so rich that they probably just throw the cash in an investment fund and never touch it for the rest of their lives. I say change the rules to make them spend it. Buy a car, a house, a politician, breast implants for your mistress, etc. Put the details on social media and let the fans live vicariously.

I understand when teams trade down from the perspective that there is nobody left on the board that they really want and it results in a lower player salary, then it can actually be a good move.

I kind of get it if it happens at a point in the draft where you really have nobody left on the board that you really like and where it doesn´t really matter any more.

If it happens with the 45th pick though, I really wonder. First, you apparently really did a bad scouting job if you have a mid 2nd rounder and couldn´t find 45 players in a draft you might want on your team. Second, if there is simply no space on your roster (not the case here), or there is really nobody in the draft you like, just trade it for a future 2nd rounder, there will definitely be teams interested in the 45th pick.

It looks especially bad if it´s a market from the size of Chicago. I don´t know for how much they can be sold right now, I remember that a few seasons ago teams could spend around 5.6 Million in total per season for things like that and that 2nd rounders normally were sold between 500k to a Million.

So definitely not an amount a team that was as being worth 5 Billion by Forbes last season (6th place of all NBA team) should actually need.

Reinsdorf isn't a good owner, but this trade is minor so it's not a big deal.

When they traded Jordan Bell for cash that was a different story. They had just traded Butler and were in the start of a rebuild. Cashing out of round 2 shouldn't happen in that case.

I think the Spurs have done this almost every season since Peter Holt’s kids have taken over :/
It really doesn’t matter in a vacuum but I fear it portends cheapness in the future if we ever build a truly good team.
I just keep telling myself they are doing this because they are forward thinking and so they CAN pay up when it’s needed down the line, but I don’t really believe it tbh.
