Why does Houston need more forwards? They needed a MLE shooting guard.

Dillon Brooks replacement. 4 years is a lot but excellent pick up for the remaining KD years. Tari Eason and DFS on the bench with Amen and Jabari starting - serious wing depth, athleticism and defence around KD

I like this for both sides, very reasonable for Houston, and a pretty significant financial move for Finney-Smith. Win-win.

Which I think works. I'm a believer in you can play whatever positions you can defend for the most part.

Why didn't the Lakers retain him? I thought the new owner had deep pockets

For sure and if they slide up he can play 3.

NBA is very positionless now days, as we all know.

If Lakers let DFS go just like that then something is really cooking in the backgrounds. But Rockets got a good one it's just the ankle surgery that worries me a bit.

He had a player option, opted out and became an unrestricted free agent.

they probably like what DFS brings in terms of 3&D over the SG options that are available. Guys the play no D are plentiful like Gary Trent, Malik Beasley, etc. They are not interested in that even if they have less depth at SG than forward.

Right, but you can most often keep your guys if you pay more than other offers, and Houston really isn’t paying him much.

So this is either a situation where the Lakers were looking to offer a guy who is worth way more to them than market value, less than market value.

Or, DFS just wanted out.

In either case, this seems pretty bad for the franchise.

I understand that, but I figured they would've had the opportunity to match or beat the offer based on his connection to Luka and this was more of a Lakers decision than dfs decision. I guess it's possible he genuinely preferred Houston based on their championship chances

its like HOU is going for a setup with defined roles at the 1 and the 5, and the other guys are all swappable based on matchup and need.

Spending money like can be wide if you flip the player for assets when the time comes.

The word is they want to maintain maximum flexibility for 2026.

Perhaps new ownership wants to do their own spending come handover.
