[Shams] OKC Jalen Williams agrees to 5 year max extension

The deal is for $239m. $287 is if he hit every incentive. The $287 number is slightly misleading, especially as I see readers asking how he got more than Chet.

Same thing that's happening to Caitlin Clark.

Predictable and deserved. He is a top 10 player at this point.

These contracts were scaring me because of the 2nd apron but after playing in excel for awhile I've learned they really can pay everyone except Hartenstein after next season and still stay under the 2nd apron.

OKC has to put up the money, he got All-NBA, & is on track for more in his career. They got one title, now they get one year of "free play" before both Holmgren and Williams extensions begin and the entire squad is still together from the Title run.

That being said, there are still ways for them to re-arrange the roster in the future (especially mid contract paid players like Joe, Kenrich, the other Jaylin Williams, and Dort)

We will see how well that plays out, but OKC also has picks on the way the next two years, and a collection of seconds as well. This is what the entire plan was years ago, now they have to see it out to fruition.
Cheers

OKC has their big three locked up. But this almost certainly means Dort/Wallace/Hartenstein will be hard to retain

Good thing they have all those picks to replace the role players around these 3.

What percent of the cap are these 3 taking up in a couple years?

2nd Apron 4 life.

Good on ownership for putting the chips in the middle of the table though.

Easy call here. Chet is more risky.

I like JDub but man, him playing beside SGA is gonna make him 100s of millions of dollars
What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.

Excuse me?

Unless you meant top 10 player on the Thunder, then, yes, I agree. Could be a typo as well, because he is definitely a top 100 player.

They should drop Dort not Wallace if there is a salary cap issue later. I don't watch a ton of OKC but it sure seemed like Wallace was the cleanup guy when Dort started having issues.

SGAs kicks in 2027-2028, and at that point, a lot!

SGA- 64M
Jdub- 50m
Chet- 45m

160m roughly. Projected cap is 173m lol. 2nd apron projected 233m though.

Rough math, based on projected cap/luxury tax: above the 1st apron in 2026-2027, above the tax in 2027-2028 but that's assuming Dort and Wallace are not extended which will probably push them to the 2nd apron.

At the very least, they probably have a 2 year window before they start making decisions.

Yep, the general plan looks clear. Keep the picks for cheap contracts to build around the core trio, let it ride.
