ESPN: Joel Embiid sees you

This is one of the best pieces of sports journalism of the year. If you have 30 minutes, give this thing a read. It goes through Embiid's career, and paints a complex picture of the man.

He's been misunderstood. He's not blameless in that. He's been dominant, and then hobbled or absent. He's been resented for that.

Even his most painful grief has been thrown in his face. At the start of Embiid's rookie season in 2014, his 13-year-old brother Arthur was hit by a truck and killed. The day Arthur died, Embiid ignored a series of phone calls. When he finally answered, it was terrible news.

Even now, phone calls can send a tremor through him, a quicksilver slice of panic -- someone is dead. In fact, he rarely answers texts or calls. His notifications are turned off.

Those who need to reach him do so through his assistant or his wife. His replies can take months.

"I have a reputation of being not a good texter," Embiid tells me, adding that he probably has 10,000 unread messages.

"You're kidding," I say.

He reaches for his phone, taps the screen and leans forward to show me. More than 9,500 unread texts and 875 missed calls. Some of the messages are years old.

"I just can't do it," he says, sitting back.

I ask who this annoys most in his life.

"Everybody," he says.

This reads like the end of a career-type article.

At Embiid's best, there's no one to compare him to. Not Nikola Jokic or Luka Doncic or Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who for all their offensive gifts can't turn the interior of the defense into a black hole. Not Giannis Antetokounmpo or Anthony Davis, who for all their versatility can't ascend into a trance of pure jump shooting.

I love you Embiid and I hope you are able to comeback strong. But honestly I would rather you do your talking on the court.

This does not improve my opinion of him and honestly I think it's a bad message to send. I get it, you experienced some bad trauma and have regrets. I don't mean to be crass but go ahead and join the rest of us in this thing we call life. What you can't do is emotionally shut down forever and refuse to process your experiences. That leaves you a prisoner of your past and will poison anything you try to do.

I feel for you Joel, I really do. I lost a very close cousin to a drunk driver in my teens so I do understand. But as an adult and especially as a man, you have to find your way through that stuff one way or another.

Maybe I’m reading too deep into this, but this screams end of the road kind of sentiments.

Like almost preparing the fanbase of the inevitable.

Sad to see if true, another big man great to not reach him true potential due to injuries.

On the other hand Philadelphia future still looks bright with VJ/Maxey/McCain, things could be a lot worse imo.

Not everyone understands how to cope with trauma, and if they do, it might take them a while to understand falling into those habits of acceptance/denial is triggered by the Unconscious as a means to survive. That being said, I agree with what you said.

I can't wait until this guy is out of the league. Although he basically already is, which has been nice.

That's what I took away from the article too, and because this wasn't just some fluff piece, I think that's the logical takeaway. He had some trauma and terrible experiences, but he also has not handled it remotely well and has some very real flaws as a person.

Glad to hear his eyesight is good. I hope his knees are as well!

The knees he sacrificed for the meaningless MVP award. Good one Joel!! At least you got that hardware to look at when you can't get yourself off the couch at 35y/o

None of these unfortunate events can excuse him for being a dirty and unlikable player on the court, though.

I'm sorry that he has experienced trauma as well as loss. But his throwing his body around the court so recklessly that he injures others as well as himself is dangerous. Or him constantly complaining when things don't go his way. He's a whiny 7'+ man-child who only got tall, but never grew up.

Haven't cared about this guy since he whined his way to an MVP, which was clearly the focal point of his career. He's been a shell of himself since then. I'll pass on this.

You sound like the exact sort of person who needs to read this, in my opinion.

I think the article actually does a good job of confronting the sort of pity party aspect of Embiid s personality and why confronting that is a logical next step he needs to take. About as well as an article can do.

The negative reaction to this piece just proves how heartless and really dehumanizing the view of today’s NBA players are among fans specifically online ones. It’s rather sad.

I understand his fear of answering the phone. I received one of those calls late at night with my phone on vibrate and I picked it up. One of the worse calls of my life. Night calls are dreadful.

Am I reading this correctly? I see a lot of finger pointing but 0 self reflects.

The organization been dysfunctional for years but he also only played in less than half of the games and kept playing hurt or underperforming in the playoffs. And he is on a supermax contract. He's been part of their mess and the their fans deserve better. Simply put, the fans just want someone who can get on the court and play basketball and ultimately win games.

He needs to medically retire if this is another ramp up season, imo.
