It is always way more likely for a scrub to score 50 in some fake game in March than someone to be the greatest of all time over a whole career no matter how talented they are.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

Brace yourselves for this:

I seen Corey Brewer score 50 pts.

What I want to know is how high was the OP when he thought of this question? It's so random.

This raises a good point about the OP question because Brewer was a better player yet a worse scorer than Flynn, making his 50pt game even more unlikely

Yeah, it is absolutely true, but Flynn definitely shook my belief system. Before his 50 point game, I thought maybe 40 NBA guys could score 50, now I believe it might be 200 guys at least. I always say that all these players in the NBA are good, relatively speaking, even the worst player in the NBA would be MVP in some other league, but still, Flynn scoring 50 points was wild, he just signed with Bahçeşehir, a top half Turkish team that plays in Eurocup, still pretty insane that guy who did that in the NBA, is on Bahçeşehir 1.5 years later.

Corey Brewer was the closest thing to Viveks cherry pick basketball, because he would be first to abandon defense and run to offense the second opponents shoot the ball. He probably gave a lot of rebounds and scores in his career, but he sure scored a lot of those fast break points where he just first guy on the other end of the court. DId he play with Love, I believe he did, it was perfect for him cause Love does those quaterback passes after grabbing a rebound, if Brewer played with Jokic, he probably could have had more than one 50 point game

Lol, it's two hours since I've read the OP and until now (UcanUwill's post) I didn't even realize that No. 2 already DID happen.

Some NBA podcasts were fun after Flynn scored 50. I remember one where other guy gave host 100 guesses to guess who was the player who indeed scored those 50 points, because it was so random

he did, that game we had a pretty brutal line up since we could only score via Love/K Martin, both were out, Harden was running on Fumes and a late April game where he coasted, tried to kinda play hard at the end, hit what he thought was probably the game winning 3 as the Rockets would dial in on defense, only for Dieng to kinda hit a wierd fadeaway jumper, then Harden trying but turning it over with a second to go.

This isn't the 90s, 00s or even '10s. Players chuck tons of threes these days and the game is more tailored for offensive players.

A guy like Dean Wade scoring 50 on an extremely hot night is easily more likely than Wemby being the GOAT.

I mean he has a chance but it's more likely he ends up being viewed ala Wilt, ridiculously gaudy numbers, a couple titles and ranked in the 4-8 range all time range.

anyone can drop 50 in the NBA, just look at the list and you’ll see random names

Brandon Jennings
Tony Delk
Willie Burton
Ray Williams
Mike Newlin
Saddiq Bey
Caris LeVert
Vernon Maxwell

the list goes on

I was very surprised to see Donovan Mitchell on that list (of players with only one 50 point games). Sure, it's regular season only, but he dropped 50 in the playoffs three times and had that one 71 point game. Incredible that he had 71 points, but never anything between 46 and 71 points in the regular season. For comparison, Devin Booker has 8.

If you had asked me how many 50 point games Mitchell had in his career (regular season), I probably would have guessed 5.

How does basketball reference calculate this stat.

Does it only count regular season?
Does it have to be a game where the scored 50 exactly or is it 50+.

I wish they would be explicit and provide the query.

Edit: nvm, I started drilling down on invidual players to see their highest scoring game and I understand it's representing 50+ games in the regular season. I wish they would have made that clear though.

Yeah, it's 50+ and regular season only. Usually the stats are regular season only unless stated otherwise.

I got the numbers for Mitchell from the 'Game Highs' table: https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/mitchdo01.html#highs-reg-season In the pages for individual players you can switch between regular season and playoffs.

Because for some silly reason people only count regular season towards career totals and records.

Kareem’s old points record of 38387 was only regular season, and Ignore’s the additional 5762 playoff points.

Career point totals: https://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/pts_career_c.html

Fun fact, if you took all of Lillard career points and gave them all to Larry Bird, they still combine to be less than LeBron.

I think Flynn couldn't even get a secure contract even scoring the 50 so NBA GMs looked it as a fluke or a game where the opposing team didn't really care who won that day.

Wemby is the best player at his size ever already but he is going to have injury issues once he gets some miles and being the GOAT talk is way into the future.

Tldr. 50 games don't really matter unless your the Toronto Raptors as their fan base is on cocaine and eat that kinda stuff up.
