The creators of an AI tool and Discord community that allowed people to create AI videos of NBA stars says that it got a cease-and-desist letter from lawyers representing LeBron James. This marks one of the first known times that a high-profile celebrity has threatened legal action against an AI company for enabling the creation of nonconsensual AI imagery of their likeness. It is also one of the first times we’ve seen a celebrity take legal action against a type of nonconsensual but not strictly sexual type of AI-generated content, which is rampant on Instagram and other social media.

I agree with you about the larger ramifications potentially involved. Moreover, a large number of artists, writers, actors, and producers have successfully sued over this in recent years, making it (for example) much more difficult for bad guys to use AI to simply copy the work of famous people (and either pretend to be them or pretend to generate creative product that is actually a near copy of real artists). I very much support this kind of legal work.
On the other hand, suing over the AI-generated production of obviously fake caricatures designed to mock public figures is silly. Similar types of satire have a long history in the West and have almost invariably been found to be protected free speech.

We're about to cross over a part of human history that we'll all be looking back on days like the present as simpler times. Better enjoy it while its here. Massive changes looming imo.
