4th Greatest Shooting Guard of All Time

Post#1 » by mdonnelly1989 » Tue Jul 29, 2025 5:03 pm

I think a vast majority have MJ, Kobe, Wade....So who's your 4th?

I imagine T-Mac doesn't make it because longevity.

I think this really comes down to 3 primary candidates.

James Harden, A.I and Clyde. Harden had the best peak/prime. And Clyde has a ring.

Wade and Harden are arguable for 4th. West is top 3.

Not sure I would consider Harden a shooting guard but if you do it would have to be Harden.

If Harden is a PG, I would probably put Drexler.

Definitely like this:

Jordan
Kobe
West
.... then Wade.
:o LeBron is 0-7 in game winning/tying FGs in the finals. And is 20/116 or 17% in game winning/tying FGs in the 4th/OT for his career. That's historically bad :o

He was good, great in some seasons, but come on, he rarely played starters minutes in the greater scheme of his career, and for good reason.

Is West a PG in your book? Because he clearly has a better case than all of those guys and probably Wade too really.

I voted for Drexler. Maybe it's a nostalgia vote but he was a very good playoff performer and just a bull. I think his aggressive style wins more than a Harden though Harden is probably the more skilled player. Clyde was souped up Manu in a lot of ways. Acrobatic, great finisher, great playmaker, solid defensively. Both went bald early too.

Of course, it depends who you count as a SG. I.e. Jerry West. If he's in then we're arguing about 5th.

He was also a sixth man. Why should we compare a guy who was hidden all throughout his career against legitimately franchise players who anchored the offense? Absurdity

Jordan
Kobe
Wade
Harden

Curry is technically a SG too btw and he’d be right up there with Kobe

Wade is the polar opposite to Harden.
Wade delivered one of the greatest NBA Finals EVER with 34.7ppg .468fg 7.8rpg 3.8apg @ 2006 Finals, including 42, 36, 43, 36 to close the series.
Harden shrinks in the biggest playoff games, and they aren't even NBA Finals games.
I mean Harden was in the NBA Finals with 12.4ppg .375fg 4.8rpg 3.6apg @ 2012 Finals, but before his prime.

Jerry West. Kind of embarrassing not having him in the poll.

He wasn't always a sixth man though. People act like he played his entire career as a sixth man but that isn't true at all. When he was carving up the vaunted Pistons defense in 2005 he was a starter that entire season. He almost always closed the games too regardless of him starting of not.

Not saying he is the 4th best SG ever but to act like he was being hidden is the real absurdity imo

So disappointed that West wasn't an option to vote for.... Had to vote other.
Cheers

I always thought Jerry West was classed more as a PG in the way Steph Curry is thought as, which I'm guessing is why he's not on the list. BKref has JW as a PG for most of his career (not saying that it's accurate). I wasn't alive when he played so I can say first hand.

Jerry West for me, but if we say he's a PG, I would have to go with Harden. So on my personal list

1. MJ
2. Kobe
3-4 West/Wade (not sure)
5. Harden

But I i'm like 95% sure SGA will overtake Harden within a few years.

In a redraft, given health, all those guys are going ahead of AI. Fun player to watch for sure, but just too small and inefficient and a liability on defense especially nowadays where there aren’t too many sub 6 foot guys

Depends how you classify players as PG's or SG's.

My list depending on classification:

PG's - Magic, Curry, Oscar, Stockton, Paul, Nash, Kidd, Thomas, Payton, Shai

SG's - Jordan, Kobe, Wade, Harden, Drexler, Iverson, Miller, Allen, Gervin, Manu

SF's - Lebron, Bird, Durant, Dr. J, Kawhi, Pippen, Baylor, Wilkins, Pierce, Luka (premature but soon)

PF's - Duncan, Malone, Giannis, Dirk, Garnett, Barkley, McHale, Rodman

C's - Kareem, Russell, Shaq, Wilt, Hakeem, Jokic, Robinson, Ewing, Malone
