Who is your ATG 3&D player

Post#1 » by tamaraw08 » Thu Jul 31, 2025 5:48 pm

Mine is the 6-8 cerebral player Shane Battier who can guard 4 positions also shooting a pretty good 38 3pt% career.

honorable mentions

Michael Cooper, Bruce Bowen.

Bruce Bowen shot .422 from downtown in the playoffs!
And that was 135 playoff games!
And was the most feared defender EVER.
What a LEGEND.

Based on what? Klay is already ahead of him on all time three pointers made list while playing 500+ fewer games and he was one of the best perimeter defenders in the league prior to getting injured. Was Reggie even considered an average defender at any point in his career?

Reggie, Klay and Leonard should not count. If that’s the case then I’ll go with Larry Bird.

3&D should be for non-all star type role players. And without that said prime Danny Green was the best at it. Was just as important as Kawhi when he won finals MVP.

Cooper/Battier

Danny Green was a really good player. He started for 3 different championship teams, 2 of which were in back-to-back years. He was a highly impactful role player.

Battier, Green, Bowen, Marion, Bell etc.

Today it's guys like OG, Gordon, Caruso etc.

Not going to include guys that made an all-star team.

Easily Klay unless we’re hedging this term exclusively to role-players

Earlier/mid career Paul George. He was a beast on the defensive end and a good shooter from outside. Although I'm not sure if 3&D is the correct description, as I see a 3&D player more as a role player who doesn't do much else than shooting threes and playing defense.

If we restrict it to role players, Danny Green was another great one.

Battier is my ATG if we are talking about a pure role player.

A guy like Klay is interesting in that he was so freaking good at 3's, that he managed to score at star-level volume even though he really didn't put the ball on the floor or create his own shot very much. It's almost like he was so good at 3&D that he took himself out of the running for this award because he was no longer a "role player". But if you think about it, he really was exclusively a 3&D player.

Klay's D was a little bit overrated though. Battier was a better defender by quite a bit.
