Hall of Fame coach Phil Jackson unloaded about his failed relationship with Carmelo Anthony during his tenure as Knicks president, writing in an upcoming book that he felt the tension between the two essentially forced him out of New York in 2017.

Jackson, as part of the book "Masters of the Game: A Conversational History of the NBA in 75 Legendary Players" set for release Tuesday, addressed his time as Knicks president from 2014 to 2017 during the chapter of the book on Anthony. He detailed a conversation with James Dolan in which the Knicks owner questioned whether the media would run Jackson out of town, with Jackson responding that his broken pairing with Anthony meant one of them needed to leave.

"[Dolan] said, 'I don't want you to go through it. I know what it's like to deal with these people [the media],'" Jackson says in the book. "I said, 'Unfortunately my relationship with Carmelo is kind of busted, and if he's going to be here, it's probably best that I go.'"

So, I just have to add:

Central to the quagmire was Phil's decision in 2014 to give Melo a No-Trade Clause.

I'd say all NBA GM's going forward need to recognize that giving a guy a No-Trade Clause is generally going to kill your or someone else's job down the road.

Obviously this shouldn't be a problem as long as you do it only for a player who is absolutely essential to your contention going forward, but in practice, GMs tend to feel pressure to give the clause because their team is having issues, and thus they give it to volume scorers who really NEED to be traded before the team can be a contender.

melo ruined linsanity and d'antoni too. him going to New York, especially via mid season trade as opposed to free agency, really screwed nyk in a lot of ways.

Phil Jackson proteges all failed because they kept trying to install the triangle even though they never had the HOF duos he coached. Guy was a bad exec, HOF coach. We can admit both things.

i'm all for melo slander but phil seems to like to write books about how other people were tough to get along with. also, seems to ignore that i don't remember a lot of good phil jackson executive moves in new york.

Teams today still run elements of the triangle. It's just a motion offense meant to create open shots by reading the defense. It's like saying "spacing is outdated in modern basketball". It will never be outdated. The shots that are taken in the offense will change but it can still work with the right personnel. It does require a certain level of IQ for all 5 players to make the same reads and make the correct cuts, but Melo was never known for his IQ.

I always think back to Pau Gasol's first game as a Laker. The chemistry in his very first game with Kobe, in the middle of the season, was immediately apparent. No training camp, no preseason, no film study, just threw on a Laker jersey and immediately fit perfectly. When they asked him after the game how he seemed so comfortable in the offense, he said "it's just fundamental basketball".

The MJ/Scottie Bulls always had sharp shooters in their offense. Hodges, Paxson, Kerr, Kukoc, even Scottie himself. There would just be more attempts from outside if they played today but they could still run the same offense.

Well, what I'd say is that there is no "on skill alone" because when that player decides he wants out, him having a No Trade Clause means he can reject anything that gives you anything up substance back.

So you really shouldn't consider it for a player who might ever want to leave, and that means I wouldn't consider it for anyone who isn't really old.

Jackson is also the only head coach to really make the triangle work. The triangle offense is not an easy offense to teach and implement and in the hands of lesser coaches it becomes a disaster. Others tried to make it work even before 2010 and they all failed.

Even though it was Tex Winter who innovated the triangle offense Jackson will forever be tied to the triangle offense and the triangle offense is tied to Jackson. I don't think we can truly evaluate the triangle offense in the modern day when the only coach who can unlock its potential is Jackson himself.

Phil Jackson convinced Melo they would be able to sign better talent if he took a discount at $124/5 Years and offered a No trade clause to show the franchise was committed to him.

Jackson also had a bad relationship with Porziņģis who supposedly refused to meet with him for an exit interview in his final season.

Phil was forced out of NY because he did a very poor job as president of basketball ops.

Yeah. He seemed a little out of touch with what worked, handed out some bad contracts... he just didn't have it. He was a better coach than an executive, which isn't super surprising.

Lebron and Nash spoke about this topic in this episode. Essentially, like what you said, teams still run elements of the triangle, but not the exact same plan because of pace and space.
