Deandre Ayton is surprisingly consistent

Post#1 » by LockoutSeason » Thu Oct 30, 2025 4:48 pm

He’s good for 16/10 no matter where he is or who he’s playing with.

Putting up solid numbers has never really been his issue.

I never liked just cutting him for nothing. What a dumb move.

Contract year, I guess.

But it's not like he's that good so far, -4.2 BPM, -11.0 on/off, I'd wait a little bit before (over)praising him. Great pick-up on a minimum, but let's wait if he's really any impactful long term.

He's an empty stats player.

He's like the Corey Maggette of centers.

The thing about statistics alone is that they don't tell the entire story. Ayton was lackadaisical and quit on the team during that series. It's part of the reason we lost.

He's always done this. The problem is that these numbers just don't win games. His box score looks nice if you never watch him play and ignore everything else

The chemistry between AR and Ayton has been a pleasant surprise, he looks comfortable scoring off those pocket passes and that jumper in the paint has been automatic. We haven't really unlocked him as a lob threat yet, but I'm sure that will change once Luka and Lebron get more comfortable with him. It'll be interesting to see how engaged he looks on nights where he isn't getting as many touches on offense. I still worry about his motor and effort.

He is a solid but unspectacular rebounder. Hes a pretty solid midrange shooter.

His motor runs hot and cold and his effort on d likewise.

He gets himself into trouble when he tries anything more complex than a simple finish.

Great. So he’s still an empty stats guy like he has been his whole career?

I'm pretty sure Thomas Bryant or Tony Bradley would put up similar numbers if given similar playing time, but they don't play as many minutes for the same reasons Ayton shouldn't be. I don't blame the Lakers, though, you have to put someone out there.

Quit defensively AND offensively, or just defensively?

The problem has never been putting up stats if he gets touches. The problem is what happens when he has to defer to more talented offensive players. He tends to pout and his effort goes to zero.

Ayton has averaged between 14/10 and 18/12 his whole career, no one is actually unaware of that. What people have constantly questioned about Ayton isn't his ability to put up numbers, I think that was obvious, wasn't it?

only numers I want is 20-12 or more, set screens like his been doing, roll to the basket and have a motor going all year - so far haven't seen that Angry Ayton he talked about.

Honestly that moment during the Wolves game where the ran into Reid, I really wanted to see a fight, just to get him going, but with all due respect, he well made peace with Reid.

If he is making $30+ mill then yea he is a bum..but on under $10 mill a year is a solid deal. Also consider the lakers other options at center
