Did Mark Williams just expose Victor Wembanyama?

Suns and Williams game plan worked perfectly tonight. Also great to job Nick Richards.

Williams, Richards, Khaman Maluach... seems like the Suns built a team specifically to shut down Wemby.

Is this something other teams will be copying soon?

Good news is spurs won’t be playing the suns in the post season. Wemby will make more shots

Mark Williams standing reach is 9-9. Wembys is 9-7. He is also more physical than Wemby. Wemby certainly has that guard skill set and is a fantastic playe, but he is not used to playing against someone longer than he is.

Yes, Wemby should now decide that he's not for this and retire from the NBA.
We are looking for a center in Panathinaikos, i think he can help for 10-15 minutes.

Dude, have a little faith. I get that people didn’t have high expectations for this team, and I might be a cockeyed optimist, but I truly believe that with the right culture in place, San Antonio can sneak into the postseason too.

The Suns exposed him by putting small guys on him.Williams and Richards were rarely 1 up defending him. They basically blitzed him when he had the ball making him pass it. On this night, his teammates weren't hitting enough open shots.

Mark Williams has physical gifts most other centers just don't have. The other guy who tends to give Wemby trouble is Dereck Lively who is one of the only other centers with such outrageous length who can move well too. But he got 5 fouls in 10 minutes in the opener so the Mavs were BBQ chicken, especially with Gafford out who would have tried what Nick Richards did here. Almost any of the playoff teams don't have the gigantic center rotation needed to bother Wemby so he's going to be a serious problem for most teams

I know it’s small sample single game etc etc, but in spite of his poor shooting night, in a 12 point loss Wemby was -3, and the other Suns starters were -15,-17,-23 and -25.

I expect he'll drop 40 the next time they play the Suns.

Everyone has an off night every once in a while. Sometimes you get caught off guard by a team and then you adjust the next time.

There’s nobody in the league that can genuinely shut down Wemby one-on-one. You need the super tall guy to bother him and the pesky defenders to attack his dribble. Can still punish you in many different ways when he adjusts, though, you're cooked if his teammates are hitting their open shots or if his contested mid-range and outside shots are falling for example.

That was Victors standing reach when he was 7'1", nobody but the Spurs knows what his standing reach is right now. Nobody in the NBA is longer than Wemby, hence all the blocked shots.

It wouldn’t be realgm if fans didn’t seriously overreact after one game.

Zion already exposed him, despite Wemby's blocks, Wemby generally had no answers...

Sun will finish 8th and Spurs don't want to see them in the 1st round LOL

I remember when some fans said the same of Ware.

Suns had a good game plan but our counter and its execution were poor. Wemby repeatedly swung the ball, found open teammates on the weak side, but we shot a piss poor 10-41 from 3 for 24.4% compared to Suns' 57.6% on 19-33. Taking more of the shots we missed more of to the tune of our opponent making nearly double our makes is tough to compensate for even though we had more fast break points (20-11), points in the paint (64-38), second chance points (24-12), and O boards (16-5).

So if by expose you meant double and triple teaming him (no FTs for Wemby lol ok... Not what accounts for the result but still silly) while one team shot twice as well, um ok.

We could and should have set Wemby up better not just on the blocks; too few P&R alley oops, too few attempts of Wemby going dowhill with momentum off a high screen.

But our front court rotation consists of Wemby, Kornet, Sochan, Olynyk, Bismack, and for the last I think three games we have had available Wemby and Bis. It's paper thin and limits our options while overtaxing Wemby as he gets mauled inside.

Tip of the hat to the Suns for the scorching shooting though I suspect being able to corral our one good big without other go-to options played a big part as well.

So that's why I look forward to the rematch when both teams have fully available rosters.

It's a bit of a right of passage, learning how to manage that. They should get him talking more to D-Rob. One area where Robinson was actually really good was abusing smaller players. Mobility-based guys often have some learning to do, though of course Wemby's already flashing all the tools to get there.

As far as one-game overreactions goes, it is what it is, you know? If it becomes a pattern, then we have something more to talk about.

Centers/PFs aren't as physically imposing in his era, so Wemby shouldn't be abused much during the regular season... so the issue is whether he has to face one of the few physical big men in a 7 game playoff series.

Phoenix did a great job with him. This is why I laugh every time there are people here saying he should just post up. Most of the time, he can't! He needs to have momentum or get the ball on the move, where the defense loses contact with him briefly. When he does, it's extremely hard to stop. Fox will help tremendously with this, as he commands lots of attention himself and gets downhill very well. I know people here clamor for Fox, the all star level guard they acquired for nothing, being a bad signing, but hes going to help a ton in both their half court and transition offense. Wemby will bounce back.and average between 25-30 ppg while winning DPOY in a runaway.

I knew you were a Wemby hater based on the way you were talking about him in that last thread, despite your best efforts to hide that fact by claiming it wasn't coming from a place of hate when it definitely was lol.

And Wemby had 10 Blocks in this game against the Pelicans, 4* of which were on Zion. Not 2. No need to lie to push a narrative.
