46 points triple double in OT win, but damn, it is crazy how big a load this guys carry

https://www.si.com/nba/cade-cunningham-made-unfortunate-shooting-history-during-ot-win-vs-wizards

Cunningham finished 14-of-45 from the field in 46 minutes. By missing 31 shots, he broke Kobe Bryant’s record of 30 missed field goals, which is the most since the NBA started keeping track of all these stats in the '83-'84 season. Kobe set the record on Nov. 7, 2002 when he scored 41 points on 17-of-47 shooting in an overtime loss to the Celtics.

Brings a tear to my eye as a Kobe stan. 14/45 is some legendary chucking.

Yeah volume westbrick game. To give him credit he did contribute other ways but the shot selection and making was not good

Scott Haskin was a 1993 top-14 pick by the Indiana Pacers whose career was cut short by injuries. In his 27 games played in his career, he took 45 shots. Cade matched him in one game lol.

I mean, I said this in another thread discussing this but, like... who else was going to take those shots?

Ausar Thompson and Tobias Smith weren't playing.

Jalen Duran? Duncan Robinson? Ron Holland, in his second start of the season? The Pistons are a little light on offensive talent, and still had Daniss Jenkins tripling his usual shot volume off the bench.

SOMEone had to take the shots, and it was gonna be Cade. This is a scenario not far different from 87 Chicago or 05 and 06 LA in the sense of a team requiring a huge workload on O from its core star. Cade isn't the guy to do legendary things as a scorer, but he's trying. He's doing everything asked of him, but it's not a task a properly-constructed team should land on one player.

Meantime, it's worth noting that he still managed to generate 15 shots inside the RA, or over 33% of his attempts. That alone should be interesting to people, because a) that's a huge percentage for shots at the rim, and b) that's considerably better than he is usually able to manage. So while he was struggling to finish when he got there, I wonder if this might not be a game where he starts to figure out that he can do that a little more regularly. Maybe that'll help him going forward.

Ugly percentages, but they won.

He has to be able to trust his guys a bit more, too. He was forcing some, which is not what we've been normally seeing from him this season. Both teams also missed an extraordinary amount of shots, it was literally the ugliest basketball game I've seen since those 05 Pistons days where we'd win with 68 points. That game last night was a rollercoaster, a fever dream. There is truth to the fact that Cade will need to take more shots with this many injuries to the roster. So even if it was ugly? A W is a W .

Context is important too, which the article doesn't even speak about Detroit being down 6 players. Nor does it talk about the fact this was a back to back. But regardless I can't sit here and give any more reasoning than that, it already sounds like excuses  BUT, there is truth to the fact that man was straight gassed by the 2nd half. Tons of front iron misses.

So the pistons rotation guys that missed the game:

Tobias
Stewart
Ausar
Ivey
LaVert
Sasser

Who else was going to score? It's not like he decided to chuck away for the heck of it, that was the game plan.

Don't get me wrong, that was not a good game by cade by any stretch, but it was gutty game. He asked to carry it all and had 12 rebounds, 11 assists, 5 steals, 2 blocks. And for handling the ball that much, only turned it over 2 times. Oh, and this was the second night of a back to back. And he got injured on hard foul. Most importantly, they won.

Y'all had Daniss Jenkins taking like 15+ FGA. He had no one with him. At some point, he's the only guy on the floor creating shots, so he only HAD passing angles so often. I feel like this is one of those games where Cade should get a pass, because damn, that was difficult to manage. And harder to watch.

Absolutely, I agree. I just sometimes wish we'd try other things, especially when we're facing the Wizards down 6 players. Like you said, I was hoping to see Cade play off-ball a bit and get a pass. I wanted to see us trying out Klintman more in the roller spot. I wanted to see if JB would slow the offense down maybe just a little bit to let Duren try to go to work on Sarr, but I think killing our pace like that is a big no-no in JB's philosophy. But I get it, the winning streak and our placement is important to our team. I was just worried about overplaying Cade so much in a game that nobody should be mad at if we lost. But those guys are going to compete every night no matter what. I say Cade needs to trust his guys, I'm probably wrong in assuming that. It was most likely the game plan all along to just launch Cade like a cannonball at the rim.

Daniss Jenkins really looked nice out there, made the biggest shot of the game. We have local writers calling him the "secret weapon" now

Yeah, that makes sense. But Detroit is a bit starved for initiators on the perimeter, right? I can only imagine the thought was to keep the basic plan going because others might have struggled more to generate looks under pressure, and they didn't want to lose to a 1-win team.

But it's done. He won, he's off today and they play Chicago tomorrow. Hopefully some of the other guys will be back. Harris probably won't be, Ivey definitely won't be, Sasser won't be. Stewart and Ausar are out with ankle stuff that doesn't have a listed timetable, so maybe? LeVert, I dunno, something something knee that you'd know about better than I would.

So... blech, I guess.

If you watched the game, you'd say Cade at least should have 60. He missed an incredible amount of EASY shots by his standards, many of them basically gimmies/straight up easy layups. Thats unlike Cade, but it was good shots, they were just in and out the whole night. Never seen anything like it to that extend.

Even with the bad percentages, there was no doubt who the best player on the floor was. Special player.

There have only been 8 games of 45+ FGA from a single player in the 3pt era. Kobe's the only one to have done it more than once. So Cade joins Kobe, Jordan, Webber, and Jalen Brunson.

JB did it last year, but it had been since 2016 when it last happened, in Kobe's final game (which was actually 50 FGA). And even for him, that was a decade after he'd done it in 06 (he did it twice that year), and 4 years after he'd done it the first time in 02.

It's a bit of an arbitrary barrier, of course: Jordan took 43 FGA twice in his 87 season, but still. And it's a little easier with 3pt volume. Jordan and Webber COMBINED for 6 3PA. In Kobe's first, he went 0/8 from 3, then 7/13 during the 81-point game, then 4/11 in a 58-point game, and then 6/21 in his last game.

Wild stuff. xD

They won the last two games and it was on a back to back. Cade is special. You can see him carrying the squad. There is chucking and there is carrying the team. Kobe was a chucker for similar reasons, which is why he often got a pass (no pun).

I'm adding Detroit to my teams to watch more this season.

lol I've heard the "best player on the floor" argument before  I'll say this. After seeing Cade play in the playoffs, I'm not too surprised at his performance today.

Maybe he'll improve in the future, but this is who he is right now.
