....15?

26-11 = 15. "Cushion" refers to how many they can lose before dropping below .500, the fine line they have trod for much of the last few years before Bynum's ascension.

Hell I would trade Odom right now for Haslem and filler.

Dwayne Wade would gladly accept that deal and so would Lebron for Drew Gooden.

Lamar gets a lot of hate from Laker fans, but i bet Lebron and Wade would gladly take him for Haslem or Drew Gooden.

You sure about that can you give me a date, and their record on that date compared to New Jersey's?

Its a good thing we have B-Scott on these boards so he can tell us how LeBron and Wade think in different scenarios

New Jersey

Code: Select all

40     Mon, Jan 21, 2002     @     Dallas Mavericks     L     105     113     27     13     L 1

Milwaukee

Code: Select all

39     Mon, Jan 21, 2002     @     Detroit Pistons     W     97     79     26     13     W 8

I was mistaken... I could have sworn they were first for a good part of the season but they were separated by 1/2 game at this point in time.

I vividly remember their fall from grace, 1st in the division and a game away from the Finals the year before, to out of the playoffs with basically the same core with everyone relatively healthy.

Fair enough. You're right that that was one epic collapse.

The one that came to mind for as the last team of this stature to collapse was the '04-05 Kings who had an identical record at this time. But while there's no doubt that was a huge collapse, that still only dropped them to 50-32 by season's end.

I remember in a thread several weeks ago about teams who could potentially win 60 games and I listed the Lakers if Bynum could continue playing out of his mind.

It's unfortunate that he got injured because that might have actually come to fruition.

It's a long season and there is a better team with just as valuable a player out there in Bean Town.

...meanwhile Kobe is leading the Lakers completely by himself? I guess during the slide at the end of last year his teammates were shooting baskets for the other team just trying to hold him back! :P

It relates to the whole swingman value vs. big man value. The swingman can be the better player, but because of the structure of the game and scarcity of big men are more valuable, as in Shaq saying "Kobe is the best player on the planet, but I'm the most dominant". I would say the difference in Boston's record roughly equals the difference in players around KG, although KG does have a weak bench and Allen has been out of hurt and playing frequently. Personally I like to see players in Kobe's position win the MVP over players in KG's. Although, I do believe Bynum is the biggest difference in the success of the Lakers. Kobe has played this well before and his Shaqless teams have not faired as well.

The most important issue regarding my response is that it's a very close race between Bryant and KG, it is far from being determined and comments like "If Kobe Bryant isnt awarded the MVP this season i'm just done with the NBA" are illogical because of this. There are solid grounds for giving both players the award at this point, but it's not really smart to project whose going to win at the end of the regular season because the most important parts have not been played yet.
