Mr. Consistency

Post#1 » by jeremy1215 » Wed Jan 16, 2008 9:12 pm

Guess who's numbers these are:

17.3 PPG
5.8 RPG
3.2 APG
49% from the field
43% from three
In 33 MPG

Did you guess Mike Dunleavy? Because if you did, you're right. Why does he get so much hate? The guy is living up to his contract, and is one of the best off the ball offense players in the league. Suprisingly enough, he isn't as bad of a defender as he is known for. He tries his best every night, and hustles with the best of them. So why is he still hated so much?

No one hates Dunleavy. He's just a very boring player, so he gets no attention.

Correction: He's finally living up to his contract / draft hype.

I don't see him hated that much anymore either =/ he's definitely playing a lot better now than in years past and it's not a fluke IMHO he just needed out of G-State.

Being a quiet consistently good player in the NBA means you're boring. See Duncan etc. If you're always in the media for being a jackass and play street ball then you're hyped up like crazy. Especially on these boards.

Why do you have to be a low IQ player that dunks to get attention around here? Just because he isn't on the highlight reel doesn't mean he isn't a great player. He has to be one of the smartest players in the game right now. He rarely makes mistakes, and he is always at the right place at the right time.

I think Dunleavy and Luol Deng of last year are about the same, and Deng got attention. In fact, Dunleavy is putting up about the same numbers plus a three point shot as Deng of last year.

I can't say much about him from a personal perspective because I haven't made a point of watching him, however:

Watching League Pass games, I've noticed most announcers are typically most critical of his lack of ability to create his own shot. Also, what essentially equates to his "lack of court presence" is the reason he flies under the radar (from the perspective of fans and opposing teams). He's got solid fundamentals but I have a feeling he'd absolutely collapse under a double-team. But a good player? For sure. Very well-coached and seems to understand the game better than almost anyone.

ESPN gave Chris Bosh their highest praise for consistency last year (although I'm not sure if he deserved it over absolutely everyone else). I wonder who it will be this year?

Deng is younger and on the Bulls so his hype factor automatically gets multiplied by 6.

A lot of players can't create their own shot. Actually, its good to have players like him that can hit open shots and don't have to doninate the ball to do it. And he can drive the ball when needed.

Yeah but he hasn't been nearly as good this year.

Yeah yeah, that's cool. But you asked why he isn't really getting very much attention. This is why. I don't particularly think anyone hates him, it's just that he doesn't jump out at you because he's not an exciting player.

You're never going to hear the play-by-play guy go nuts saying "OH BABY WHAT A PLAY! DUNLEAVY WITH THE OPEN 14-FOOT JUMPER" :P

Well for one, the numbers he is putting up now are new to him. He has never been this consistent before. For two, coach K compared him to Grant Hill before the draft. For three, and probably most important, he has called out his coaches, teamates, and even the fans when things weren't going right.

For all you anti-hip hop and streetball people (whatever the **** that means), you complain about guys dunking and getting hype but you are perfectly willing to assume that any white guy playing "fundamental basketball" is a nice dude and people don't like him because he doesn't dunk. The guy has always had the reputation as a prick.

Yeah but do people actually think this? He plays fundamentally sound ball, but I've heard he was a jerk too. I just didn't think anyone would draw a correlation between the two.

The question was: why the hate? The answer is that he has alienated a good portion of the people he has been associated with since coming to the NBA. Not because he doesn't dunk. A few people made the comment that you only get credit in the league if you can dunk and play street ball and thats why people don't like Mike. I disagree with that.

I guess consistency is about giving all out every game, but not average numbers......

And no one hates him.

He hasn't been called a prick here in Indiana, not at all. And if my fans hated my guts I think i'd be a jerk to them too.

I hate the dude...he's a slow white stiff...

he's pretty boring...he screwed warriors pretty bad...had some consistenly garbage games...

He's basically putting up good numbers on a bad team...

see: MIKE JAMES toronto raptors

He can't create his own shot, his D is sorely lacking, his quickness is minimal...

Don't even try to compare Luol Deng to this bum...

He's just putting up good numbers on a bad team...that's it..
