Goaltending

I was playing nba 2k8 today, and was going for a dunk, and got blocked, and it got me thinking, can you be goaltenned on a dunk? i mean a dunk is a field goal attempt, so im assuming if your coming down it should count as a goaltend, however i have never ever seen it called? just a random observation i was wondering about

I guess it only counts as goaltending if the ball left your hands

exactly a block on a dunk like that, the dunk is coming down? so is it goaltending?

No, because Duncan had his hand on the ball.
Only way it can be goaltending is when the ball is on its downward slope by the SOLE force of gravity.
Here's a better question though: WHat if someone went up for a dunk, and when the player attempting the block jumps up for the BA, the dunker lets the ball fall out of his hand (as in it goes straight down) and gets blocked.
Goaltending? He didnt exactly attempt the dunk, and the ball was it its downward motion when blocked.

It would technically be goaltending, but it would never be called.

From the NBA Rules
Touch any live ball from within the playing area that is on its downward flight with an opportunity to touch the basket ring. This is considered to be a "field goal attempt" or trying for a goal.

goaltending a dunk? i dunno, maybe if you try to block it by going up thru the bottom of the rim?

ok another question, if a block is knocking the ball out of a hand, even though its a shot, isnt it technically a steal aswell??

I think once the ball becomes a FGA, it can't be considered a steal. I could be wrong.
When player A tips a ball from the ball handler and player B gets the ball, who is credited the steal? (A + B are on the same team)

If you are strong enough you could pin a dunk attempt against the backboard. That would be a goaltending call.

really?
i find that kind of dumb. i would think if it's still in the guy's hand it wouldn't be considered a 'shot on it's way down' yet.

Technically speaking, a dunk is a shot that starts on its way down. With no crest on the arc, does it make a difference? Hmm...
Good question from the OP. A technicality, but a good question.
