MVP and PER

Looking back at the past 28 MVPs shows that if you aren't a PG, then you need to have a top 4 PER in order to have a chance to win the MVP. So I think these are the top 5 MVP candidates as of right now: LeBron, KG, Paul, Billups, and Nash.
Kobe is currently 7th and has only finished in the top 4 once in his career.
The last 28 MVPs and their PER ranking.
07 Dirk 2nd
06 Nash not top 4
05 Nash not top 4
04 KG 1st
03 Duncan 3rd
02 Duncan 2nd
01 Iverson not top 4
00 Shaq 1st
99 Malone 2nd
98 Jordan 4th
97 Malone 1st
96 Jordan 2nd
95 Robinson 1st
94 Hakeem 3rd
93 Barkley 4th
92 Jordan 1st
91 Jordan 1st
90 Magic 4th
89 Magic 3rd
88 Jordan 1st
87 Magic 2nd
86 Bird 1st
85 Bird 1st
84 Bird 2nd
83 Moses Malone 1st
82 Moses Malone 1st
81 Dr J 4th
80 Kareem 2nd

So, other than Nash, who got it supposedly for making his teammates so much better, the only person not in the top 4 to get it since 1980 was Allen Iverson. Pretty good correlation . . . top in 2001 was Shaq who also led the Lakers to the Championship and should have gotten it.

MVP goes to whoever is most valuable to their team, not who is most efficient. It just happens that there is a relationship between PER and value.

Its a great stat but not the end all be all as per only takes into account one side of the ball.

LMAO...
This Lebron trolling is ridiculous. Now do the correlation of how many players have won MVP when their team was 3 games above .500 in mid-january.

Plus the fact that Billups and LeBron are not MVP candidates over Kobe/Dwight...

79 Moses Malone 3rd
78 Bill Walton 2nd
77 Kareem 1st
76 Kareem 1st
75 McAdoo 2nd
74 Kareem 2nd
So 31 of the last 34 MVPs had a top 4 PER.
1st - 13 times
2nd - 10 times
3rd - 4 times
4th - 4 times
not top 4 - 3 times
There is a strong correlation between winning the MVP award and having a top 4 PER.
KG will likely get it if he stays healthy and Boston finishes with the best record.
50 wins also seems to be a requirement so it will be tough for LeBron to win it this season.

this reminds me of the 65+ wins = championship stat people were throwing around last year.

It's been 34 straight years that the MVP either had a top 4 PER or was under 6'4" tall. Will that streak continue?

I don't think you can argue that Nash didn't make teammates better. Joe Johnson would have way less money right now if Nash wasn't behind him. Same with Steven Hunter... the list goes on. It's like Kidd with K-Mart.
